HEAR
The scriptures show that many things must take place in order for someone to
have his sins forgiven and thus become a Christian
One must hear the message of the gospel: Romans 10:14
How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed?
And how shall they believe in Him whom they have not heard? The gospel is
God’s power to salvation – Romans 1:16
There was a distinct message that every one heard, that gave them the
information they needed, in order to become Christians in the first century.
That same message is available and needed today for a person to become a
Christian – Christ gave the apostles the great commission that included
teaching the lost the gospel
Matthew
28:18-20; Mark 16:15, 16
In Acts 2, when the church began there was the gospel preached to the Jews.
Included in that preaching were facts to be believed, commands to be obeyed,
and promises to be received
Some facts they heard:
1. God raised Jesus from the dead – Acts 2:29-32
29
Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that
he is both dead and buried, and his sepulcher is with us unto this day.
30
Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to
him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise
up Christ to sit on his throne;
31
He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was
not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.
32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
2, Jesus is at the right hand of the Father – Acts 2:33
33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of
the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye
now see and hear.
3. God made the same Jesus, Whom they crucified, both Lord and Christ – Acts
2:36
36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made
that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
Commands to be obeyed:
Repent and be baptized for the remission of sins – Acts 2:38
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in
the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the
gift of the Holy Ghost.
Promises to be received:
Forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit – Acts 2:38
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in
the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the
gift of the Holy Ghost.
Please notice that they heard. Listened to the gospel message in order to
know the facts of the gospel and what they needed to do In order to be
saved:
Acts 2:37-42
37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto
Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in
the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the
gift of the Holy Ghost.
39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are
afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save
yourselves from this untoward generation.
41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day
there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship,
and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
