Know, Grow, Glow and Go

INTRODUCTION:

A. We need to discuss a four part need that we all have as Christians.

B. years pass by quickly and we need to let ourselves become what Jesus wants of us.

C. The Scripture is our standard

Romans 15:4
4
For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

I Corinthians 10:6
6
Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

I. KNOW:

A. must have knowledge

Hosea 4:1-10
1
Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.

2
By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.

3
Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.

4
Yet let no man strive, nor reprove another: for thy people are as they that strive with the priest.

5
Therefore shalt thou fall in the day, and the prophet also shall fall with thee in the night, and I will destroy thy mother.

6
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

7
As they were increased, so they sinned against me: therefore will I change their glory into shame.

8
They eat up the sin of my people, and they set their heart on their iniquity.

9
And there shall be, like people, like priest: and I will punish them for their ways, and reward them their doings.

10
For they shall eat, and not have enough: they shall commit whoredom, and shall not increase: because they have left off to take heed to the LORD.

B. Deuteronomy 6:1-25
1
Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it:

2
That thou mightest fear the LORD thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.

3
Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey.

4
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: Mark 12:29

5
And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. Deut 10:12 Matt 22:37 Mark 12:30 Luke 10:27

6
And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

7
And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

8
And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.

9
And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

10
And it shall be, when the LORD thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not,

11
And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full;

12
Then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.

13
Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name. Mt 4:10 Luke 4:8

14
Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you;

15
(For the LORD thy God is a jealous God among you) lest the anger of the LORD thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth.

16
Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God, as ye tempted him in Massah. Mt 4:7

17
Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he hath commanded thee.

18
And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the LORD: that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess the good land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers.

19
To cast out all thine enemies from before thee, as the LORD hath spoken.

20
And when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD our God hath commanded you?

21
Then thou shalt say unto thy son, We were Pharaoh's bondmen in Egypt; and the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand:

22
And the LORD showed signs and wonders, great and sore, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his household, before our eyes:

23
And he brought us out from thence, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he sware unto our fathers.

24
And the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this day.

25
And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the LORD our God, as he hath commanded us.

C. Truth is important:

1. John 8:32-40. They thought they knew enough.

32
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

33
They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?

34
Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.

35
And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.

36
If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

37
I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.

38
I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.

39
They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.

40
But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.

2. Rested in their self-confidence. We do too! – Paul was Christ – confident

 Philippians 4:13

13
I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

D. II Timothy 2:15

15
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

II. GROW - KNOWLEDGE ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH:

A. Luke 2:52

52
And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

B. I Peter 2:2

2
As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

C. I Peter 1:22-25

22
Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:

23
Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

24
For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: Isa 40:6,7

25
But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you. Isa 40:8

D. Hebrews 5:12-14

12
For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

13
For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

14
But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

E. Ephesians 4:11-16

11
And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

12
For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

13
Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

14
That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

15
But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

16
From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

III. GLOW - NOT FLASH:

A. Matthew 5:14-16

14
Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

15
Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

16
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

B. Fire attracts attention- sawmill fire saw from a great distance.

C. I John 1:7 - be light walkers

7
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

IV. GO:

A. Family, friends, loved ones

B. We have what the world needs - Go!

C. Matthew 28:18-20

18
And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

19
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

20
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

 Mark 16:15,16

15
And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

16
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

CONCLUSION:

Amen.

GOD’S LOVED ONES

Romans 1:1-7

1
Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,

2
(Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,)

3
Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;

4
And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:

5
By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:

6
Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ:

7
To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

INTRODUCTION:

A. Man has a basic need. That need is to be loved.

B. God realizes this PROBLEM; because He put it there, and especially He lets His people know that He loves them.

C. Romans 1:1-7 deals with Paul's salutation -Speaks of self, Gospel, Son, and the recipients of the letter.

D. This lesson will focus in on the recipients, God's children, and see how God views them.

I. CALLED TO BE Christians by JESUS CHRIST

 Romans 1:6

6
Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ:

A. All Christians are called:

1. Called means an invitation extended and accepted.

2. Not a small still voice.

3. Called by the Gospel

 II Thessalonians 2:14

14
Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

B. "Called of Jesus Christ.":

1. Shows possession by Jesus.

2. Jesus owns us:

a. Revelation 1:5 - Jesus is our King.

5
And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

b. Acts 2:36 – Lord.

36
Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made the same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

C. We are servants as was Paul

 Romans 1:1

1
Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,

1. Servant - "Doulos = bondman:

a. Purchased servants

 Acts 20:28

28
Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

I Corinthians 6:19,20

19
What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

20
For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

b. Purchased to serve

 Romans 12:1, 2

1
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

2
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

c. A servant is worthless unless he serves

 Matthew 25:24-30

24
Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed:

25
And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.

26
His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed:

27
Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.

28
Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.

29
For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.

30
And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

II. BELOVED OF GOD

 Romans 1:7

7
To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

A. We are God's loved ones:

1. Expresses God's view toward us.

2. The Father proves His love for us:

a. John 3:16

16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

b. Colossians 3:12

12
Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

c. Romans 5:8

8
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

d. Ephesians 2:4,5 - great love.

4
But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

5
Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

e. I John 3:1

1
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

B. We are loved by the Godhead:

1. Ephesians 1:3,4 - Father willed redemption.

3
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

4
According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

2. Ephesians 1:6,7 - Son purchased redemption.

6
To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

7
In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

3. Ephesians 1:13,14 - Holy Spirit agent, sealed redemption.

13
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

14
Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

III. CALLED TO BE SAINTS

 ROMANS 1:7

7
To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

A. To be - does not mean future; We are SAINTS NOW

 JOHN 17:17

17
Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

1. Sainthood is a positional thing:

a. It is how God views you - RIGHTEOUS.

b. Righteousness like Christ

 Romans 3:21

21
But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

2. Not speaking of a person's own righteousness - He has none

 Philippians 3:9

9
And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

B. Passages that show we can be counted righteous by God:

1. Romans 1:16

16
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

2. II Corinthians 5:21

21
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

3. Romans 5:8-11

8
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

9
Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

10
For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

11
And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

4. Romans 4:6-8

6
Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,

7
Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Psa 32:1

8
Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. Psa 32:2

C. Grace is not a license to sin

Romans 6:1

1
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

D. Sainthood should motivate us to live godly in this present world.

IV. GRACE TO YOU AND PEACE

 Romans 1:7

7
To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

A. Grace is God's redemptive blessings to you

 Ephesians 1:7

7
In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

1. Even though you were once a criminal, a law violator, you broke that law which was capitol in nature and God's justice would demand your eternal death; God's grace had worked out a system whereby you can be freed from the guilt and punishment – Romans 8:1.

1
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

a. Acquitted - case dismissed, guilt removed.

B. the difference in being the Lord’s:

1. We deserve WRATH - Romans 1:18 - When we sin.

18
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

2. Romans 5:1 - wrath ends, peace begins - IF YOU ARE a SAINT.

1
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

CONCLUSION:

A. Many don't obey God because they are frustrated, have no hope, and feel too guilty.

B. You need to see God's love to you as He has proved it by giving us His plan for redemption.

C. All God asks in return is the rest of your life in FULL serve to Him.
