Attitudes of the Good Life

I Peter 3:8-12

8
Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:

9
Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.

10
For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: Psa 34:12,13

11
Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. Psa 34:14

12
For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. Psa 34:15,16

Introduction:

a. God is the architect of human life. He knows what will make us happy and complete.

b. the attitudes that God requires are essential to our spirituality.

I. Developing Christian Attitudes

I Peter 3:8,9

8
Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:

9
Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.

A. “Be of One Mind” (NASV, "harmonious") - The phrase means to be united in the same purpose, the same goal. Unity of practice begins in a unity of purpose. Jesus prayed for this kind of unity in John 17:20, 21

20
Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

21
That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

Notice also Acts 4:32

32
And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.

 John 5:30

30
I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

 Romans 15:5-7

5
Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:

6
That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

7
Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God.

B. Have "Compassion For One Another" (NASV, "sympathetic") - This means to have pity, a feeling of distress toward the ills of others - Matthew 9:35-38.

35
And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

36
But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.

37
Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;

38
Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.

C. “Love as Brothers" - Literally, this means to be "brother lovers” Peter lists “Philadelphia” (brotherly love) as an essential element of spiritual growth in II Peter 1:7.

7
And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

It is through this love for one another that we may be able to convince the world that we are truly the faithful of Jesus - John 13:35.

35
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

D. "Be Tenderhearted” (NASV, "kindhearted") - This descriptive term is used only here and in Ephesians 4:32.

32
And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

E. “Be Courteous" (NASV, "humble in spirit") - humble-minded, emphasizing the spiritual demeanor of lowliness (poor in spirit). This attitude would lend a person to be courteous as opposed to insolent or arrogant toward other – Matthew 11:28-30.

28
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29
Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

30
For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

F. “Return blessing for evil" - When someone does us evil, we are to respond with a blessing! While this may go against "human nature" - two reasons why we are to react in this way:

1. We are called to follow the example of Christ – I Peter 2:21-23.

21
For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

22
Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: Isa 53:9

23
Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:

2. That we might receive a blessing from God - Luke 6:35.

35
But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.

II. Motivation Toward Unnatural Attitudes. To motivate us in fulfilling these duties, Peter quotes from the Psalm 34:10-12:

10
The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing.

11
Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD.

12
What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good? 1 Pet 3:10

A. “That we MIGHT Love life and see Good Days” - Everyone wishes to enjoy life as they experience it from day to day. But too often, many make their own lives miserable by their own self-seeking, self-destructive attitudes.

B. So that the Lord will be open to Us in our living and prayers

I Peter 3:12

12
For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. Psa 34:15,16

 also notice Proverbs 6:16-19.

16
These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:

17
A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

18
An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,

19
A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

Conclusion:

A. God knows what is best for us.

b. Hew knows what makes life worth living and how we can see good days.

c. We must strive to be like Him.

Not Ashamed of the Testimony of Our Lord

II Timothy 1:8

8
Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;

Introduction:

a. No father ever wants his son to be ashamed of him. Paul’ relationship with Timothy was not unlike a father to a son.

B. Paul wanted Timothy to not be ashamed of what he saw in Paul, but to be willing to follow his example and share in his sufferings.

c. How can we be people who are unashamed to stand up for Christ?

I. The Importance of Spiritual Courage

 II Timothy 1:12-16

12
For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

13
Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

14
That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.

15
This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.

16
The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain:

A. There is a level of commitment that says - "I don't care what the world thinks, says, or does, I will stand up for Christ”. It willingly accepts the suffering that comes with obedience.

B. We must not let the opinion or actions of others keep us from doing what was right at the moment – Romans 1:16 - Yet the risks we have faced were much less serious than those Timothy faced.

16
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

c. II Timothy 1:5

5
When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

II. The Reasonableness of Spiritual Courage: How can Paul encourage and convince Timothy to follow his example and confess Christ in the face of persecution and rejection? Why should you and I not be ashamed of the Lord’s testimony?

A. The resources of God’s Spirit: Timothy had been given something that made courage reasonable. What did he have? - The gift of God which is in you. - II Timothy 1:6.

6
Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

b. The verb “stir up” means to rekindle or fan to a flame. It is the opposite of the word “quench” that Paul uses in I Thessalonians 5:19 – “do not quench the Spirit”.

19
Quench not the Spirit.

III. What type of spirit can Christ create in us?

A. A Fearless Spirit

 II Timothy 1:7

7
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Romans 8:15-18

15
For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

16
The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

17
And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

18
For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

B. A Powerful Spirit: Dunamis (power) denotes great force, or energy, and is the term from which we get dynamic and dynamite. It is effective, productive energy, rather than that which is raw and unbridled. God provides us with His power in order for us to be effective in His service

 Ephesians 1:18-23

18
The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

19
And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,

20
Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,

21
Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:

22
And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Psa 8:6 1 Cor 15:27 Heb 2:8

23
Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

C. A Loving Spirit - Romans 5:5,6.

5
And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

6
For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

D. A Disciplined Spirit (of sound mind): The Greek word is sophronismos –Thayer says it is …an admonishing or calling to soundness of mind, to moderation and self-control; 2) self-control, moderation." It depicts one who is stable and self-controlled in both life and doctrine.

 Romans 12:3

3
For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

 I Corinthians 9:26,27

26
I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:

27
But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

Conclusion:

a. Are you ashamed of the testimony of Christ? Or do you earnestly desire to stand up for Him and have Him create in you a spirit of power, love and discipline?

b. We need power, to be effective in His service; love, to have the right attitude toward Him and others; and discipline, to focus and apply every part of our lives according to His will.

c. When the characteristics of power, love and discipline exist in God’ people, God does great things

 Ephesians 3:14-21

14
For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

15
Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,

16
That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;

17
That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,

18
May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;

19
And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

20
Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,

21
Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.
