A MESSAGE OF ASSURANCE

Titus 1:1-4

1
Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;

2
In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

3
But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;

4
To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.

INTRODUCTION:

A. PAUL, in his letters, always gave a source of encouragement when he presented a task.

B. Titus needed encouragement just as you and I do today.

C. We have basically the same task entwined in our Christian duty today:

1. Set things in order

 Titus 1:5

5
For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:

2. Stop mouths of false teachers

 Titus 1:11

11
Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.

3. Speak things that befit sound doctrine

 Titus 2:1

1
But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:

4. Exhort workers (servants) to be under the master's control

 Titus 2:9

9
Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again;

5. Remind one another to be subject to those who have the rule over them (government)

Titus 3:1

1
Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,

6. Help brethren appreciate the grace of God

Titus 3:4-7

4
But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,

5
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

6
Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;

7
That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

I. I AM ONE OF GOD'S ELECT

 Titus1:1

1
Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;

A. Elect - EKLEKTOS - to pick out; to be selected or chosen:

1. We are "hand-picked" by God.

2. Paul was hand picked

Galatians 1:15,16

15
But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called me by his grace,

16
To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood:

 Acts 9:15

15
But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:

3. Jeremiah was hand picked

 Jeremiah 1:5

5
Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

4. We are chosen by God today

 Ephesians 1:3, 4

3
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

4
According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

B. How did God chose us?

1. Through the gospel

 II Thessalonians 2:13,14

13
But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

14
Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

C. Why did God chose us?

1. To work His eternal purpose.

2. To do His work on earth.

a. The reason for urgency in using our abilities

Ephesians 4:11-16

11
And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

12
For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

13
Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

14
That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

15
But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

16
From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

II. I HAVE THE HOPE OF ETERNAL LIFE

Titus 1: 2

2
In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

A. II Timothy 2:10-13 - Salvation is in Christ:

10
Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

11
It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him:

12
If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:

13
If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.

1. Hebrews 6:17-20 - Jesus is our anchor.

17
Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:

18
That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

19
Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;

20
Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

2. II Peter 3:9

9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

B. Eternal life has to be in the Son - Hebrews 5:8,9 - the author of eternal life.

8
Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

9
And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

III. THE MESSAGE

 Titus 1:3

3
But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;

A. A planned message

 Galatians 4:4

4
But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,

B. A revealed message

Ephesians 3:2-6

2
If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward:

3
How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words,

4
Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)

5
Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;

6
That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:

C. What the message is not:

1. Not a hand on the radio to receive salvation.

2. Not sending for a prayer cloth.

3. Not just a good feeling in the heart.

D. What the message is:

1. I Corinthians 15:1-4

1
Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;

2
By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

3
For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

4
And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

2. I Corinthians 2:1-5

1
And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.

2
For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

3
And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.

4
And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:

5
That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

3. Romans 1:16,17 - power to save from sin.

16
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

17
For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. Hab 2:4 Gal 3:11

E. The message demands obedience

 II Thessalonians 1:7-9

7
And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,

8
In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:

9
Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

Mark 16:15,16

15
And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

16
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

IV. WE HAVE A COMMON FAITH

 Titus 1:4

4
To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.

A. Common - shared by all who are in Christ

 Galatians 3:26-29

26
For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

27
For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

28
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

29
And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

B. Jude 3

3
Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

C. Acts 2:44

44
And all that believed were together, and had all things common;

D. Common faith depends on Jesus:

1. He never changes

 Hebrews 13:8

8
Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

2. We must conform to him

 Romans 12:1,2

1
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

2
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

CONCLUSION:

A. Are you one of God's elect?

B. Do you keep in mind your assurance of salvation?

C. Have you obeyed the message?

D. You must share this common faith.

REVELATION FROM THE CROSS

INTRODUCTION:

A. I Corinthians 1:18

18
For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

B. The only way that man has ever known anything is by revelation.

C. Revelation is the making known of a fact to someone who does not know it.

D. If it were not for revelation, we would not know the Will of God - The Bible is our revelation today.

E. We can look at things about us today and they have a revelation for us -Creation - Creator - Romans 1:20 Today, there is a revelation (message) from Calvary's cross that deals directly with our lives. Let's notice five things that the cross reveals to us.

20
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

I. THE CROSS OF CHRIST REVEALS SIN:

A. How exceedingly bad sin is

 ROMANS 3:10

4
God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged. Psa 51:4

  ROMANS 3:23

23
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

B. We should never take sin lightly

 I John 3:4

4
Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

II. THE CROSS OF CHRIST REVEALS GOD'S LOVE:

A. The story of the cross is a tender love story

Romans 5:6-8

6
For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

7
For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.

8
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

 John 3:16

 Philippians 2:5-8

b. God loves His people; always HAS BECAUSE of the cross, God continues to love us o

 Romans 5:9-12

9
Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

10
For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

11
And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

12
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

III. THE CROSS OF CHRIST REVEALS THE END OF THE LEGAL SYSTEM FOR THOSE WHO COME TO THE CROSS:

A. Colossians 2:14

14
Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

B. The law demanded DEATH for one transgression

 Romans 6:23

23
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

C. Everyone who lives under any law other than the law of Jesus is under a "law of works." (One transgression will destroy.)

D. We now live under the law of faith

 Romans 3:27

27
Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.

 Galatians 3:8-14

8
And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. Gen 12:3 Acts 3:25

9
So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

10
For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. Deut 27:26 James 2:10

11
But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. Hab 2:4 Rom 1:17

12
And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. Lev 18:5 Rom 10:5

13
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: Deut 21:23

14
That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

IV. THE CROSS OF CHRIST REVEALS SEPARATION FROM SIN:

A. Isaiah 59:1, 2

1
Behold, the LORD's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:

2
But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

B. Galatians 6:14

14
But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.

b. Christ died for us, we must live for Him

 Galatians 2:20

20
I am crucified with Christ: neverthless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

c. Christianity demands a separation from the ways of the world

 I John 2:15-17

15
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

16
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

17
And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

V. THE CROSS OF CHRIST REVEALS UNITY:

A. The world wants to believe in many "religions." - Over 600 in the U.S. alone.

B. John 17 - Jesus prayed for unity.

C. I Corinthians 1:10 - If division is wrong among brethren, how can it be right in the world?

10
Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

CONCLUSION:

A. What does the cross reveal to you?

B. Are you willing to accept it on His terms?
