Tell them of Jesus
 Lesson Six
We Have found water

Introduction:

a. The last section of Genesis 26 is about wells and water

Genesis 26:32
And it came to pass the same day, that Isaac's servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had digged, and said unto him, We have found water.

b. That world was different from ours in so many ways:

1. When we want water we go to the faucet turn the handle and water immediately comes forth.

2. Not so then. Water was scarce, and hostilities could quickly arise over the possession of a well of water.

3. Household water had to be carried in jars from a central source to the house.

4. So, the words
“we have found water” are great news to Israel.

I. FINDING LIVING WATER:

A.
John 4:10-14

10
Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

11
The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?

12
Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?

13
Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:

14
But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

1. “Water” was always considered God’s gift.

2. But there were two kinds of water - cistern and spring (cold, fresh)

3. Jesus makes that distinction with a spiritual application.

B. What Jesus said about the water He would give?

1. Quenches “thirst” - permanently - answers man’s greatest need;

2. Brings one to eternal life

 Isaiah 12:3
Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.

3. But so many are satisfied with cistern water when living water is accessible to them

Jeremiah 2:13
For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

C.
John 4:28,29 - is not this the Christ?

28
The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,

29
Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?

1. At
John 4:41 - And many more believed because of his own word; wonderful words of life - John 6:63 - It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

2. But there is something said at
Genesis 26:18 - And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.

Spiritual application in view of John 4:14 - But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

3. the well can be stopped if we do not defend it - keep it in good repair!

II. FINDING WATER FOR BAPTISM:

A.
Acts 8:36
And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

1. Philip had been preaching Christ to him

2. Had he made reference to the words of Jesus recorded at
John 3:3-5

3
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

4
Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?

5
Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

“Born of water”?

3. In any case, the need for baptism was clear in this man’s mind.

B. Water now has a new “purpose” for this man:

1. It becomes the “medium” in which obedient faith accomplishes its saving purpose!

2.
Acts 22:16 helps us understand - And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

3.
Ephesians 5:26
That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word.

c. Have you found the water?

1. the significance of baptism - its meaning and its necessity.

2. Coming to this understanding and being baptized should bring joyful expression!

Acts 8:38,39

38
And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

39
And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.

III. FINDING PURPOSE IN FLOWING RIVERS:

A.
John 7:37,38

37
In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

38
He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

1. The occasion was the Feast of Tabernacles

 John 7:2
Now the Jews' feast of tabernacles was at hand.

2. A harvest feast in which thanksgiving for abundant outpouring of water was an important part.

3. Once again, “water” of the occasion becomes the great spiritual lesson from Jesus.

B. This time he notes the outflowing water:

1. One who has drunk the water of life becomes a giver of the water of life!

2. Everywhere the “river” goes, there is “life.”

3. Jesus never proposes damning up the stream for selfish uses ... He always proposed that the beneficiaries of His blessings should be givers of them!

Conclusion:

a.
Revelation 21:6
And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

Revelation 22:17
And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

b. any here who need to drink of the living water Jesus offers.

c. If so, you need to “find” the water of baptism. And we invite you to come to that water now!

THE CROSS: A SIGN OF OUR SINS

Philippians 2:8

And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Introduction:

a. the CROSS REMINDS ONE OF one of the most significant events in human history, the death of Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God.

b. But the cross has other reminders, For example, the cross is a reminder of the sins of mankind.

I. SIN: THE CAUSE OF THE CROSS:

A. The sin offering

 II Corinthians 5:21

For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

1. Jesus the atonement for our sins

 I John 2:2

And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

2. clearly sin is the reason the cross was necessary.

3. Had there been no sin, no sin offering required.

B. The Lamb - the sacrifice

 Revelation 5:6

And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth:

1. Hebrews 10:10-14 “one sacrifice for sins forever”

10
By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

11
And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:

12
But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;

13
From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.

14
For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

2. Jesus the Lamb

 John 1:29

The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

3. The cross reminds of sin and the perfect sacrifice.

II. SOME SIN FACTS:

A. What is sin?

1. such a simple definition

 I John 3:4

Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

2. Sin is a violation of the law of God.

3. His law is revealed in scripture - break His law, ignore His law, omit to do His law, and you have sinned.

B. What does sin do?

1. it separates you from God

 Isaiah 59:1,2

1
Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:

2
But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

2. It makes you dead in God’s sight

Ephesians 2:1

And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins

 Romans 5:12

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

3. it denies one of hope

 Ephesians 2:12

That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world.

C. How extensive is sin?

1. Romans 3:23

23

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God

 Romans 3:9,10

9
What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;

10
As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

2. Each accountable person, except Jesus, has been affected by the guilt of sin.

3. Without the cross, the sin offering, that guilt could not be resolved and hell would be our destination.

D. What is the fate of sinners without the cross?

1. Ezekiel 18:4,32

4
Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

32
For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.

Ezekiel’s answer: death

2. Romans 6:23

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. Sin - without the cross - results in eternal condemnation

3. People all around us are dead ... and destined for the final wages of sin

III. THE CROSS IS THE ANSWER TO SIN:

A. II Peter 3:9 - The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. - God has no pleasure in “death”

1. Ezekiel 18:30-32

30
Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.

31
Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

32
For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.

2. God must demand penalty for sin.

3. A loving God made a provision for payment of penalty because He has no pleasure in death.

B. Jesus given in our place

 John 3:16

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life:

1. I Peter 2:24

Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

I Peter 3:18

For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

2. Jesus paid the penalty - became the payment by the sacrifice of the cross

3. Without the cross, no atonement – eternal death would be certain.

C. But each must accept benefits of the sacrifice:

1. In Old Testament personal identification/union with the sin offering was required.

2. Acts 2:38

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

3. Romans 6:3

Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? - each person must claim the sacrifice, or he will die in his sins ... condemned

Conclusion:

a. While the cross is truly a sign of our sin, it is also the answer to our sin.

b. But it can only become my answer, your answer, when I (you) am baptized into his death, his sacrifice.

c. Only then can I be raised to walk in newness of life.
