Do You Really Want To Do It Your Way?
Introduction:
a. Old Song, I Did It My Way
b. Some concerning not doing what God says about salvation will say: “I’ll
take my chances”.
c. Why not both know and then obey the truth?
John
8:30-32
30
As he spake these words, many believed on him.
31
Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on
him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
32
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall
make you free.
I. My Way is a poor risk
Proverbs 14:12
12
There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but
the end thereof are the ways of death.
Proverbs
28:26
26
He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but
whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.
a. No one ever unconditionally surrenders on their own terms:
1. Japanese surrender on the USS Missouri in August, 1945
2.
Matthew 16:24 - "If any man will
come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me"
3.
Galatians 2:20
I am crucified with Christ: neverthless I live;
yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the
flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself
for me.
4. Jesus' terms of surrender are non-negotiable.
b. Some say, "There are many ways to get to heaven; you take yours and I'll
take mine."
c. But what did JESUS say?
John
14:6
6
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and
the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Matthew
7:13,14
13
Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the
gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be
which go in thereat:
14
Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way,
which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
Matthew
7:21-23
21
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord,
shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my
Father which is in heaven.
22
Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have
we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in
thy name done many wonderful works?
23
And then will I profess unto them, I never knew
you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
II. “My Church” is a foolish gamble:
a.
Matthew 16:18
18
And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and
upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not
prevail against it.
b.
Acts 20:28
28
Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all
the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed
the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
c.
Acts 2:47
47
Praising God, and having favour with all the
people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.
iii. Faith Only is a losing proposition:
a. "That we are justified by faith only is a most wholesome doctrine, and
very full of comfort." Methodist Articles of Religion No. IX (not wholesome,
but certainly full of error):
1. While Romans 3:28 and Romans 5:1 say we're justified by faith, they do
not say by faith only.
Romans 3:28
28
Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by
faith without the deeds of the law.
Romans 5:1
1
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace
with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
2.
Acts 13:38 - justified by Christ
38
Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren,
that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins:
3.
Romans 3:24 - justified by God's grace through the redemption which is
in Christ Jesus
24
Being justified freely by his grace through the
redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
4.
Romans 5:9 - justified by Christ's blood
9
Much more then, being now justified by his blood,
we shall be saved from wrath through him.
5.
I Corinthians 6:11- justified in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and
by the Spirit of our God
11
And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but
ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and
by the Spirit of our God.
b. "You see then how a man is justified by works, and not by faith only."
James
2:24
24
Ye see then how that by works a man is justified,
and not by faith only.
1.
James 2:21 "Wasn't Abraham justified by works, when he offered Isaac
upon the altar?
21
Was not Abraham our father justified by works,
when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
2.
James 2:25 "Wasn't Rahab justified by works when she received the spies
and sent them out another way?"
25
Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified
by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out
another way?
3.
I Peter 1:22 - "Seeing then ye have purified your souls in obedience to
the truth . ."
22
Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the
truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye
love one another with a pure heart fervently:
IV. No Baptism is a poor gamble:
a.
Mark 16:16
16
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved;
but he that believeth not shall be damned.
b.
I Peter 3:21
21
The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also
now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer
of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
v. Any Baptism is a bad bet:
a. Some people fail to understand the nature, purpose, and essentiality of
baptism:
1. Some say, "I was baptized as an infant."
Romans
6:4
4
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into
death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the
Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Colossians
2:12 -"buried with Him"
12
Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are
risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised
him from the dead.
2. Some say "I've already been immersed."
b. What is the purpose or reason for being baptized?
Acts
2:38
38
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized
every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and
ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Acts
22:16
16
And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized,
and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
c. New knowledge cannot be retroactively applied to an invalid immersion
Acts
19:1-5
1
And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at
Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and
finding certain disciples,
2
He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost
since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard
whether there be any Holy Ghost.
3
And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye
baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.
4
Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the
baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on
him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
5
When they heard this, they were baptized in the
name of the Lord Jesus.
VI. My Time is a terrible chance. Please don't take a chance with your
eternal destiny!
a.
Matthew 27:65 Pilate: "Make it as secure as you know how."
65
Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your
way, make it as sure as ye can.
b.
II Peter 1:10 -"Make your calling and election sure."
10
Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to
make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall
never fall:
c.
II Corinthians 6:2 -"Behold, now is the accepted time, today is the day
of salvation."
2
(For he saith,
I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day
of salvation have I succoured thee: behold,
now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.) Isa 49:8
d.
Acts 24:24,25
24
And after certain days, when Felix came with his
wife Drusilla, which was a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him
concerning the faith in Christ.
25
And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance,
and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this
time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.
Conclusion:
A. why not obey now?
B. why not the lord’s way?
C. why not the sure way?

Four Three Things We Cannot Do Without
Hebrews 9:22
22
And almost all things are by the law purged with
blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
Hebrews
11:6
6
But without faith it is impossible to please him:
for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder
of them that diligently seek him.
Hebrews
12:14
14
Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without
which no man shall see the Lord:
I. We Cannot Be Saved Without the BLOOD of Jesus Christ
Hebrews
9:22
22
And almost all things are by the law purged with
blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
a. From Genesis, God proclaimed the importance of blood:
1.
Genesis 4:10
10
And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy
brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.
2.
Genesis 9:3-6
3
Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for
you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.
4
But flesh with the life thereof, which is the
blood thereof, shall ye not eat.
5
And surely your blood of your lives will I
require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of
man; at the hand of every man's brother will I require the life of man.
6
Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood
be shed: for in the image of God made he man.
3.
Exodus 12:13
13
And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the
houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the
plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.
4.
Leviticus 17:11-14
11
For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I
have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for
it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
12
Therefore I said unto the children of Israel, No
soul of you shall eat blood, neither shall any stranger that sojourneth
among you eat blood.
13
And whatsoever man there be of the children of
Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, which hunteth and
catcheth any beast or fowl that may be eaten; he shall even pour out the
blood thereof, and cover it with dust.
14
For it is the life of all flesh; the blood of it
is for the life thereof: therefore I said unto the children of Israel, Ye
shall eat the blood of no manner of flesh: for the life of all flesh is the
blood thereof: whosoever eateth it shall be cut off.
5.
Acts 15:29
29
That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and
from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if
ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.
6.
John 6:53-55
53
Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say
unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye
have no life in you.
54
Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath
eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
55
For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink
indeed.
b. Jesus freely shed His blood for us
John
10:17
17
Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay
down my life, that I might take it again.
c. We could not have eternal life had Jesus not become a curse for us by
shedding His blood on the cross
Galatians
3:13
13
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law,
being made a curse for us: for it is written,
Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
Deut 21:23
d. Without the blood of Jesus, Christianity has no basis to exist:
1.
Acts 20:28
28
Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all
the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed
the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
2.
Ephesians 2:12-14
12
That at that time ye were without Christ, being
aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of
promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:
13
But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far
off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
14
For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and
hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;
e. Jesus' DEATH and His BLOOD cannot be separated:
1.
John 19:34-36
34
But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his
side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
35
And he that saw it bare record, and his record is
true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.
36
For these things were done, that the scripture
should be fulfilled,
A bone of him shall not be broken.
Ex 12:46
Num 9:12
2.
Romans 5:8-10
8
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that,
while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
9
Much more then, being now justified by his blood,
we shall be saved from wrath through him.
10
For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled
to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be
saved by his life.
f. Jesus blood is first contacted at BAPTISM:
1.
Revelation 1:5
5
And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful
witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of
the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own
blood,
2.
Acts 22:16
16
And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized,
and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
3.
Titus 3:5-7
5
Not by works of righteousness which we have done,
but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and
renewing of the Holy Ghost;
6
Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus
Christ our Saviour;
7
That being justified by his grace, we should be
made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
II. We Cannot Be Saved Without FAITH in God
Hebrews
11:6
6
But without faith it is impossible to please him:
for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder
of them that diligently seek him.
a. We must believe God EXISTS:
1.
Genesis 1:1
1
In the beginning God created the heaven and the
earth.
2.
Exodus 20:11
11
For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the
LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
3.
John 1:1-4, 14
1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was
with God, and the Word was God.
2
The same was in the beginning with God.
3
All things were made by him; and without him was
not any thing made that was made.
4
In him was life; and the life was the light of
men.
14
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us,
(and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,)
full of grace and truth.
4.
Acts 5:3,4
3
But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled
thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of
the land?
4
Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and
after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived
this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
5.
Psalm 14:1
1
The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.
They are corrupt, they have done abominable works,
there is none that doeth good.
Rom 3:10
Psa 53:1
Psalm
19:1
1
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the
firmament sheweth his handywork.
b. We Must Believe in God's PROMISE:
1.
Titus 1:2
2
In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot
lie, promised before the world began;
2.
Hebrews 11:13
13
These all died in faith, not having received the
promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and
embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the
earth.
c. Our faith must WORK
James
2:14-26
14
What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say
he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?
15
If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of
daily food,
16
And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be
ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which
are needful to the body; what doth it profit?
17
Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead,
being alone.
18
Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have
works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by
my works.
19
Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest
well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
20
But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without
works is dead?
21
Was not Abraham our father justified by works,
when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
22
Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and
by works was faith made perfect?
23
And the scripture was fulfilled which saith,
Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for
righteousness: and he was called
the Friend of God.
Gen 15:6
Rom 4:3
Gal 3:6 Isa 41:8
24
Ye see then how that by works a man is justified,
and not by faith only.
25
Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified
by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out
another way?
26
For as the body without the spirit is dead, so
faith without works is dead also.
John
12:42,43
42
Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many
believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest
they should be put out of the synagogue:
43
For they loved the praise of men more than the
praise of God.
d.
Romans 1:5;
Romans 16:25,26 - the OBEDIENCE of faith
5
By whom we have received grace and apostleship,
for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:
25
And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang
praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.
26
And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that
the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors
were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.
III. We Cannot Be Saved Without HOLINESS
Hebrews 12:14
14
Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without
which no man shall see the Lord:
A.
Leviticus 11:44,45
44
For I am the LORD your God: ye shall therefore
sanctify yourselves,
and ye shall be holy; for I am holy:
neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that
creepeth upon the earth. 1 Peter 1:16
45
For I am the LORD that bringeth you up out of the
land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.
Leviticus
19:2
Speak unto all the congregation of the children of
Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am
holy.
Leviticus
20:7
7
Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for
I am the LORD your God.
I
Peter 1:15,16
15
But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye
holy in all manner of conversation;
16
Because it is written,
Be ye holy; for I am holy.
Lev 11:44
b.
Titus 2:11,12
11
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath
appeared to all men,
12
Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly
lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present
world;
c.
Matthew 5:8
8
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see
God.
d.
I
John 1:7
7
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the
light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ
his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
e.
Revelation 21:27
27
And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing
that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but
they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.
