THE BOOK OF LIFE
Revelation 22:18,19
Introduction:
a. If you ever go into a store like Barnes and Noble, one thing cannot
escape your attention: There are a lot of books!
b. There are so many different types of books and writers of them. People
write about topics such as politics and philosophy, as well as volumes of
"how-to" books and "self-help" books. You can pretty much find a book about
any topic or any subject matter.
c. There is one book, however, that you will not find at any bookstore. Not
because its out of print or not a best-seller but because its owner has the
only copy, It’s the book of life.
d. There's not another place more important to have our name placed than in
the book of life. It is the difference between heaven and hell.
e. some OBSERVATIONS ABOUT this very important book.
I. MEN DO NOT CONTROL WHOSE NAME IS IN THE BOOK OF LIFE:
A. How fortunate we are that this is true!
B. Consider Psalm 69:4,5, 13, 27,28.
C. Exodus 32:31-33 - THIS chapter has to do with the rebellion of the
children of Israel. Aaron made the golden calf. The Lord desired to destroy
the people but Moses makes entreaty for the people.
II. NO ONE STUMBLES ONTO ITS PAGES BY ACCIDENT:
A. If your name is written in the book of life, it is because you took God's
Word to heart and decided to live according to it - Philippians 4:2,3.
B. It is something for which we must strive - Revelation 21:25-27; Exodus
32:33; Philippians 3:10-20.
III. IF YOUR NAME IS RECORDED IT IS CAUSE FOR REJOICING:
A. Man loves to have his name in the spotlight. Whether it is books,
magazines, or a newspaper.
B. What is greater than having your name in the book of life? - Luke
10:17-20
IV. THOSE WHO OVERCOME WILL NOT BE ERASED:
A. Remember, those who sin will be blotted out from the Book - Exodus 32:33.
B. Letter to church at Sardis - Revelation 3:1-5. If we overcome our sins we
have the assurance of heaven - REVELATION 2:10; REVELATION 14:13.
C. If we do not overcome, we will have to answer to God - Revelation 21:27;
Hebrews 10:24-31.
D. Called the Lamb’s Book of Life - Revelation 21:27.
E. We must not add or subtract from the Word. If we do, we risk having our
names removed - REVELATION 22:18,19.
CONCLUSION:
a. Is your name recorded in the book of life? Nothing is more urgent than to
make for certain it is there.
b. Was your name there at one time but maybe it was removed?
c. What better opportunity than right now to get your life right and have
your name re-added!
Evening Worship
To Christ Be Loyal And Be True
INTRODUCTION:
a. There are many kinds of loyalties in this world and each has its own
reward.
b. There is, however, a loyalty that supersedes all others.
c. Look at some Bible examples of the kinds of loyalties we may have:
I . imagine a modern corporation’s Vice President, who had worked very hard
to succeed, would be pleased and remain loyal, after being bypassed in
promotion by the son of the President of the company:
a. Abraham was very rich - Genesis 13:2 and Eliezer of Damascus was once the
heir to Abraham's fortune - Genesis 15:1-3.
b. The birth of Isaac disinherited Eliezer but he remained loyal.
c. Eliezer was sent to Mesopotamia to get a wife for Isaac from the family
of Nahor, Abraham's brother - Genesis 24:1-10.
d. He met Rebekah by God's providence- Genesis 24:11-27.
e. When he was assured that God had "prospered his way," he was impatient to
return to Abraham quickly - Genesis 24:49-60.
f. Stewardship’s responsibility - Luke 12:42-47.
II. Jonadab appears during the reforming purge of King Jehu of Israel:
a. Jehu was commanded to destroy Ahab's dynasty - ii Kings 9:1-10.
b. Jehu invited Jonadab to witness and give moral support to his effort to
eradicate the worship of Baal in Israel- ii Kings 10:15-28.
c. Jonadab is not mentioned again until - Jeremiah 35:1-19.
III. Jonathan was the son of King Saul, the "crown prince" and heir to the
throne and one of the great military heroes of the Bible:
a. When David killed Goliath, Jonathan's admiration for the feat prompted
him to make a covenant of friendship with David - I Samuel 18:1-4.
b. When Saul's jealousy of David grew to the point that he wanted to kill
him, Jonathan protected David - I Samuel 19:1-7.
c. When Saul again sought David's life, Jonathan helped David to escape and
made another covenant with him - i Samuel 19:8-24; i Samuel 19:1-42.
d. Saul alienated his son by accusing him of perverse ATTRACTION FOR David -
i Samuel 20:30-34.
e. In a final meeting with David, Jonathan revealed his reason for being
more loyal to him than to his father - I Samuel 23:15-18.
f.Just as Jonathan chose David over his father, because of the divine
evidence that David would be King, so Paul cast off worldly honor to be a
follower of Christ, after receiving divine evidence that "Jesus of Nazareth"
was the Christ - Philippians 3:3-16.
Conclusion:
A. The simple teaching of the Lord is that loyalty is not loyalty unless it
is total - Matthew 6:22-24.
C. The key to loyalty is found in the incident of John 6:58-71.
