Hebrews 6:9-12 INTRODUCTION: a. THE OLD Testament contains the record of many worthy of imitation b. Some of the 43 kings of Israel are among those worthies. c. We will look at the prosperity of 5 kings, all of Judah, and their examples. I. UZZIAH - II Chronicles 26:5: A. prosperity: 1. In the Old Testament - Deuteronomy 7:12-15 (physical). 2. In the New Testament - III John 2; Ephesians 1:15-20 (spiritual). b. As Uzziah "set himself to seek God," so Christ "set his face to go to Jerusalem," Luke 9:51. c. Lesson: SET YOURSELF TO SEEK GOD – Matthew 6:33. II. HEZEKIAH - II Chronicles 31:21: a. Jesus also commands "heart" commitment - ACTS 8:36,37 b. Lesson: SEEK GOD WITH ALL THY HEART -Matthew 22:37 III. JOTHAM - II Chronicles 27:6: A. Jesus is the great example of pleasing God - John 8:28,29. B. Lesson: WALK IN THE WAYS OF GOD – I john 1:7. IV. JEHOSHAPHAT - I Kings 22:43: A. His father ASA could not follow his father, but had to imitate his older ancestor, David - i KING 15:11. B. We can imitate Jesus -John 8:12; I Corinthians 11:1. C. Lesson: IMITATE THE GOOD QUALITIES OF OTHERS – I Timothy 4:12. V. JOSIAH - II Kings 23:25: A. He was a greater reformer than even David. B. His zeal was mentioned by a prophet many years before - I Kings 13:1,2. C. Lesson; TURN TO GOD WITH ZEAL FOR HIS LAW – ACTS 2:42. Concluding observations: a. Uzziah tried to usurp the function of a priest - II Chronicles 26:16-21 b. Jehoshaphat was rebuked for helping wicked kings - II Chronicles 19:1-3 c. Hezekiah foolishly showed his wealth to potential enemies - II Kings 20:12-19 D. Lesson: EVEN THE BEST OF PEOPLE CAN FALL TO THE PITFALLS OF PRIDE, VANITY, SHALLOWNESS, WORLDLINESS, AND INSTABILITY. e. "Seek ye first the kingdom of God" Some WOMEN WHO SERVED GOD
