CHRIST IN YOU THE HOPE OF GLORY

INTRODUCTION:

A. MANY TODAY do not UNDERSTAND HOPE because they do not understand the work Jesus did while on the earth

B. Every action Jesus did while here was for our ultimate redemption

C. Many often feel that God is against them, because they don’t understand His work:

1. "Who wants all men to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth."
 
 I Timothy 2:4

Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

I. HE IS OUR HOPE FOR DELIVERANCE
 
Colossians 1:13
 
13
Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

A. It was a common practice for whole populations to be moved into another country after a war:

1. Example: Northern 10 tribes into Babylon.

B. Three things to see:

1. Through Jesus - we are delivered from darkness, ignorance - into the light of knowledge:

a. In him we learn what to believe and what to do
 
 Matthew 28:20

Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

2. Through Jesus - we are delivered from the darkness of sin into the light of holiness
 
 I John 1:7

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

a. The power of sin is broken

b. Bad men/women can become good
 
 Romans 8:1

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

3. Jesus is able to reign in our hearts

II. HE IS OUR HOPE FOR RECONCILIATION TO GOD
 
Colossians 1:20

And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

A. Reconciliation - to bring together

B. Men once estranged now are reconciled
 
 Colossians 1:21,22

And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled

In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:

III. HE IS OUR HOPE FOR REDEMPTION
 
 Colossians 1:14

In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

A. This was the primary work of Jesus
 
Mark 10:45

For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
 
I Peter 1:18,19

Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;

But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

B. Redemption - "liberation at a cost."

C. God redeemed Israel in Egypt
 
 Deuteronomy 15:15

And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt, and the LORD thy God redeemed thee: therefore I command thee this thing to day.
 
Deuteronomy 24:18

But thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in Egypt, and the LORD thy God redeemed thee thence: therefore I command thee to do this thing.

IV. HE IS OUR HOPE FOR FORGIVENESS
 
 Colossians 1:14

In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

A. APHESIS - (to the Jew) - refers to the remission of debts; The cancellation of an obligation

B. He canceled the bond / the debt, obligation
 
Colossians 2:14

Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

V. HE IS OUR HOPE FOR HOPE
 
 Colossians 1:5

For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel;
 
 Colossians 1:27

To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

A. Hope for this world:

1. Sin had men defeated and hopeless:

a. I Corinthians 6:9-11

Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

b. Light was truly brought into darkness

That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

B. Hope for eternity
 
Romans 4:25

Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.
 
 I Corinthians 15:20

But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.

But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

VI. HE IS OUR HOPE FOR A NEW LIFE
 
 Colossians 2:10

And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

A. A free life
 
 Colossians 2:20

Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,

B. A clean life - Colossians 3:5 - constant cleansing

Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

c. New life
 
Colossians 3:9,10

Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

C. A forward looking life
 
Colossians 3:4

When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

D. A totally committed life
 
Colossians 3:17

And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

CONCLUSION:

A. Is Christ in you?

B. Is He your "Hope of Glory?"

C. Are You:

1. Delivered?
2. Reconciled?

3. Redeemed?
4. Forgiven?
5. Hopeful?
6. Living a new life?

The Reason for the Hope

I Peter 3:15

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: Isa 8:13

Introduction:

a. Isaiah 8:13

Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.          1 Peter 3:15

Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.

b. what are the particulars that Peter discusses in this wonderful verse?

I. But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts:

A. But sanctify the Lord God - linguistically it is closely akin to "hallowing" the name of the Father in heaven, as in the model prayer

 Matthew 6:9

After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

B. in your hearts – Christianity is a matter of the heart

Romans 6:17

But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

Mathew 6:19-21

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

II. and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you:

a. and be ready ALWAYS – (there are many things for which the the Christian needs to be ready) – examples: marriage; children; death; the judgment.

b. to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you

 Romans 8:24

For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?

 Acts 16:30-33

II. with meekness and fear:

A. with meekness

 Matthew 5:5

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Galatians 6:1

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.

B. and fear – reverence for God as we teach of give bible answers in response to the
questions of others

 Psalm 111:9

He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name.

 Colossians 4:6

Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

Conclusion:

A. do you need additional

information concerning

God’s word?

B. what will your answer be to the lord’s invitation?
