The Necessity of Bible Study

II Timothy 2:15-17

15
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

16
But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

17
And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;

Introduction:

a. Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life. And we have believed and know that thou art the Holy One of God," - John 6:68,69.

b. They knew that knowing Jesus-- and knowing His words-- was of the greatest importance. We have the written accounts of Jesus and His teachings, so "that by believing you may have life in His name" -John 20:30,31.

c. If we desire to obtain eternal life, we are going to have to believe in Jesus, and to believe in Jesus we are going to have to know His word
 John 8:30-32
30
As he spake these words, many believed on him.

31
Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

32
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

d. Let us notice why it is so necessary to study the Bible so as to know God and His will.

I. Bible study is commanded:

a. II Timothy 2:15
15
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

b. II Timothy 2:16
16
But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

c. I Peter 3:15
15
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: Isa 8:13

Romans 1:16
16
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

d. Philippians 1:17
17
But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel.

Hebrews 4:12
12
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

II. BIBLE study provides spiritual nourishment and strength:

a. Matthew 5:6

6
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

b. Psalm 1:1-6
1
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

2
But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

3
And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

4
The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

5
Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

6
For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

c. Acts 2:42-47

42
And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

43
And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.

44
And all that believed were together, and had all things common;

45
And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.

46
And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,

47
Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

III. Bible study equips us so that we may teach others:

a. Hebrews 5:12-6:2 they still needed spiritual milk when they should have already become teachers.
Hebrews 5:12
12
For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

Hebrews 6:2
2
Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

b. This is no less true today. Do you fear talking to people in your life about spiritual things? Is your fear due to feeling like you may not know enough to answer people's questions properly?

c. Fear is overcome with STUDY and knowledge.

iv. Bible study provides us the weapon to fight Satan:

a. Ephesians 6:10-18 - We are in a war against Satan.
10
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

11
Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

12
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

13
Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14
Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

15
And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

16
Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

17
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

18
Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

b. The only weapon we wield in this conflict is the sword of the Word of God
Ephesians 6:17
17
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

c. We must learn to use this weapon with skill.

Conclusion:

a. do you know the truth?

b. Are you regularly studying the truth?

c. Do you need to obey the truth
Romans 1:5?
5
By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:
