Signs on the Road of Life

Acts 28:24-27

24
And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.

25
And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,

26
Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive: Isa 6:9 Matt 13:14 John 12:40

27
For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. Isa 6:10 Matt 13:15 Mark 4:12

INTRODUCTION:

a. God gives us warning signs.

b. We must learn to read the signs on the roadways.

c. Some are easy to recognize by their shape, color, or design.

I. Dead End – Proverbs 16:25 – seems right, leads to death – second death

25

There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

Revelation 2:11

11
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.

Revelation 21:8

8
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

II. Danger Ahead – Colossians 1:28 – Warning everyman –

28
Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:

roaring lion ahead

I Peter 5:8,9

8
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

9
Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

– warning: don’t feed the animals!

III. Keep Right

 Philippians 4:8

8
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

 Whatever things are right

Matthew 7:13,14

13
Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

14
Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

IV. No Parking – I Corinthians 15:58 – always abounding in work of the Lord

58
Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

V. One Way – John 14:6 – I am the way, truth, and life.

6
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

 Acts 4:10-12

10
Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.

11
This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Ps 118:22 Matt 21:42 Mark 12:10 Luke 20:17 Eph 2:20 1 Pet 2:7

12
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

VI. Violators will be prosecuted

II Thessalonians 1:6-8

6
Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;

7
And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,

8
In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:

 God will punish violators

 Matthew 25:46

46
And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

VII. Stop  Titus 1:11

11
Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.

 stop mouths from false teaching

Acts 13:10

10
And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?

stop perverting the way of the Lord

 Galatians 1:6-10

6
I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:

7
Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.

8
But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

9
As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

10
For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

VIII. Do Not Yield – I Corinthians 10:12,13 – God will provide a way of escape.

12

Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

13
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

IX. Yield – Romans 6:13 – yield yourselves to God.

13
Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

X. turn RIGHT or else face danger

 Joshua 24:15

15
And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

Choose this day whom you will serve

II Corinthians 6:2

2
(For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.) Isa 49:8

Tomato Frog

I Peter 3:13-17

13
And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good?

14
But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; Isa 8:12

15
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: Isa 8:13

16
Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.

17
For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.

INTRODUCTION:

a. In Madagascar is a red “Tomato” frog.

b. When attacked it emits an Irritating Sticky Substance.

c. Attacker spits him out – too late – already "GOT STUCK."

d. Christians must be ready to defend their faith.

e. Christians are often too late in putting up defenses.

F. BUT, ONE CAN REPENT AND MAKE THINGS RIGHT!

I. Defend what?

a. The gospel – Philippians 1:17 “set for defense.”
17
But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel.

b. The challenge – would defame, revile – I Peter 3:16.
16
Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.

c. Our hope – I Peter 3:15 “be ready to answer reason for hope”
15
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: Isa 8:13

d. Ourselves

 Acts 26:2

2
I think myself happy, king Agrippa, because I shall answer for myself this day before thee touching all the things whereof I am accused of the Jews:

e. Our baptism – I Peter 3:21 “the answer (defense) of a good conscience.”
21
The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

f. Against Satan – Ephesians 6:10-18 - “put on whole armor of God”
10
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

11
Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

12
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

13
Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14
Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

15
And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

16
Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

17
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

18
Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

ii. DEFEND how?

a. Ready – always ready – I Peter 3:15.
15
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: Isa 8:13

b. Prepared – Romans 1:15 “I am ready to preach in Rome.”
15
So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.

c. Study – II Timothy 2:15 - “to show yourself approved”
15
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

d. Prayer – Ephesians 6:18
18
Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

“pray always being watchful”

I Thessalonians 5:17.

17
Pray without ceasing

III. Defend when?

a. Always alert, on guard, watch – Matthew 24:42 - “Watch, no know day or hour.”
42
Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.

b. Before temptation comes – Matthew 26:41- “not enter into temptation”
41
Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

c. Before darkness comes – I Thessalonians 5:4-6 - “not sleep, watch and be sober”
4
But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

5
Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

6
Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

d. Before you are trapped – Luke 21:36 -“counted worthy to escape”
36
Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.

 Hebrews 2:3.

3
How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

Conclusion:

a. The best defense is a good offense.

b. Christians must be on the attack against evil.

c. We must be pro-active not reactive.

d. Sword of Spirit and Prayer are our offensive weapons.
