QUESTIONS FROM ACTS CHAPTER TWO – PART ONE
1. What does the word Pentecost mean in Greek? Show how the feast would
always occur on the first day of the week – Leviticus 23:15,16
Pentecost means fiftieth in Greek
They were to count 7 Sabbaths after the sheaf of the wave offering and then
count one day after the lst Sabbath , thus fifty days. This would always
make Pentecost come upon the first day of the week.
2. What people had gathered together in Jerusalem to keep the feast? - Acts
2:5
And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation
under heaven.
3. How did the Holy Spirit come upon the apostles?
1. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind,
and it filled all the house where they were sitting. – Acts 2:2
2. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat
upon each of them. – Acts 2:3
3. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with
other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. – Acts 2:5
4. Give four things which show that the apostles were the only ones baptized
with the Holy Spirit on Pentecost - Acts 1:2-5, 1:21, Acts 2:1-4, 2:6,7, 14;
John 14:26; John 16:7-14:
1. Acts 1:2-5 – Jesus gave commandments to the apostles and in the context
promised them that they would be baptized with the Holy Spirit
2. Acts 2:6,7 – speaks to the fact that all who were speaking were
Galileans, which was the place from which the apostles came – Acts 1:11
3. John 14:26- Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to the apostles to
bring all things to their remembrance
4. John 16:7-14 – Jesus promised to send the Comforter (The Holy Spirit)
“unto them” – that is the apostles
5. What were some of the peculiar things about the manifestation of tongues?
1. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind –
Acts 2:2
Not an actual wind but like unto the wind – invisible - John 3:8
2. Cloven tongue like
unto fire – Acts 2:3 – Again , not fire, but like fire, Fire typifies the
Holy Spirit in that: (1) it gives light; (2) it provides warmth; (3) it
purifies; and (4) it is an emblem of God himself, Hebrews 12:29, and
standing for the judgment of God against wickedness
6. What caused the multitude to come together – Acts 2:5,6?
The sound as a mighty wind was heard and this caused the multitude to gather
7. How does Luke describe the reaction of the multitude? – Acts 2:6,7
They were confounded, because every man heard them speaking in his own
language. They were all amazed and marveled, saying one to another, because
all those which spoke were Galileans. How could they know all these
languages?
8. What did Peter tell them about the prophecy of Joel?
What is the meaning of "the last days" as used in this passage and a number
of other passages – Isaiah 2:1-4, Micah 4:1-4; Jeremiah 31:31-35; Hebrews
1:2; I Timothy 4:1-3; II Timothy 3:1-5?
This refers to the Christian dispensation then beginning. The day of
Pentecost, therefore, ushered in the "last days"
9. Why did Peter quote from Psalm 16:8-11?
This has reference to the prophesy being fulfilled of the resurrection of
the Christ. David was not speaking of himself, but Jesus. Peter points out
that David was still dead, but not so the Christ –
Acts 2:24-29
10. What did he say about David's throne -Acts 2:30-35?
Jesus was the One that the Father would raise up to sit upon David’s throne.
When peter spoke these words Jesus was at the right hand of the Father
exalted and reigning!
Note: There will be a separate lesson concerning - Christ Is Now Reigning On
David’s Throne

THE SIN OF
BLASPHEMY
part two of two
Mark 3:22-30
III. IS THERE EVER FORGIVENESS FOR BLASPHEMING THE HOLY SPIRIT? (“Once
lost, always lost?”):
A. Principles to Remember:
1. Forgiveness is available to all sinners and all sin- I Timothy 1:15
2. Forgiveness is applied only when sinners believe and obey the
Spirit-revealed gospel - Hebrews 4:2
3. God’s power to save is never diminished nor is His mercy decreased by
any sin of man -Isaiah 59:1,2; Luke 15:24
4. Every doctrine is false that says forgiveness is never available to
certain sinners regardless of their subsequent repentance and obedience!
B. Forgiveness Forbidden?
1. If there is even one sin which will never be forgiven, no matter if the
sinner repents, then:
a. Gospel not powerful to save all believers -Romans 1:16
b. Whoever cannot call on the name of the Lord & be saved - Romans
10:11-13
c. Jesus is not Savior of all men, nor even of some who (might later
repent and believe) - I Timothy 4:10
C. Example of a Holy Spirit Blasphemer being Forgiven: Saul of Tarsus - I
Timothy 1:13:
1. Paul blasphemed against the Holy Spirit by resisting the
Spirit-provided evidence that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God - Acts
26:9 -Stephen’s miracles - acts 6:8-11; Acts 7:51, 58; Acts 8:1
2. But, Saul was forgiven when he believed the gospel, repented of his
sins and obeyed the gospel- Acts 22:16
3. The idea that blasphemy against the Holy Spirit means forgiveness is
never available is false
4. Forgiveness is available to him, but the blasphemer does not avail
himself of it. Thus, he remains “subject to eternal condemnation” – his
sin is not forgiven - Romans 6:23
D. Practicing Sin - ROMANS 6:1,2
-Any sinner who does not repent of his sin “will not be forgiven,” - I
John 5:16,17:
1. The blasphemer who persists in (will not repent of but continues to
practice) his blasphemy will not be forgiven of his blasphemy (“never has
forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation,” Mark 3:29; “it will
not be forgiven him,” Matthew 12:32
-But remember, Saul was forgiveness when he repented of his blasphemy.
2. The drunkard who persists in (will not repent of but continues to
practice) his drunkenness will not be forgiven of his drunkenness (“never
has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation,” - Mark 3:29; “it
will not be forgiven him,” Matthew 12:32; Galatians 5:21
E. Repentance & the Nature of Sin:
1. Repentance does not change the nature of sin; it changes the heart and
the life in respect to practicing sin! - Acts 26:18-20
2. Forgiveness is only applied when the sinner ceases his sin - Romans
6:1-4, Romans 6:11-13
Conclusion:
a. Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is to speak / rail against the Holy
Spirit:
1. It is expressed in Mark 3:28-30 by attributing the miracles of Jesus to
Satan (thereby despising the Spirit of grace whose presence announced the
coming kingdom of God) Matthew 12:28
2. All such sinners are subject to eternal condemnation
3. Only a change of heart will change their eternal prospect
b. Can people blasphemy the Spirit today? Yes, by speaking against (thus,
rejecting) the Christ and His Spirit-revealed, inspired and confirmed
word, the New Testament – ii Timothy 3:16; ii Thessalonians 1:7-9
c. God forgives every sinner when he repents of his sin and obeys the
gospel, not before - Acts 17:30,31
