BE A GOOD SAMARITAN

INTRODUCTION:

a. About the time of the reign of Hezekiah, the great reformer King of Judah, the armies of Assyria swarmed over the northern kingdom of Israel, and, because of its descent into the abominable practices of pagan idolatry, carried it away captive.

b. Some of the Jews that were left around Samaria were integrated with the nationalities brought in by the King of Assyria, and they became a mixed race.

c. Many of them still held to the perversions of the Law of Moses introduced by Jeroboam, EVEN until the time of Jesus.

d. During the life of Jesus on earth, the Samaritans occupied a province between Judea on the south, and Galilee on the north, both occupied mostly by Jews.

1. I. Because the Samaritans were a mixed race, they were hated by the Jews:

a. The Law of Moses prohibited any mixing with other peoples

Deuteronomy 7:1-5

1
When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou;

2
And when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor show mercy unto them:

3
Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son.

4
For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly.

5
But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their graven images with fire.

B. Samaritans, who were only part Jew, were despised -Because of Jewish hatred for Samaritans, their name was used as an insult

 John 8:46-49

46
Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?

47
He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.

48
Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?

49
Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me.

II. A wicked Samaritan woman found great joy in meeting and learning from the Messiah, Jesus

 John 4:1-29

1
When therefore the LORD knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,

2
(Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)

3
He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.

4
And he must needs go through Samaria.

5
Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

6
Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.

7
There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

8
(For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)

9
Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.

10
Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

11
The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?

12
Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?

13
Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:

14
But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

15
The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.

16
Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.

17
The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:

18
For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.

19
The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.

20
Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.

21
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.

22
Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

23
But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

24
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

25
The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.

26
Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.

27
And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?

28
The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,

29
Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?

a. WE SHOULD BE EARNEST, LIKE THIS SAMARITAN!

b. Of ten lepers whom Jesus healed, only one returned to thank him and glorify God, and he was a Samaritan- Luke 17:11-19 - WE SHOULD BE AS THANKFUL AS THIS SAMARITAN FOR THE CLEANSING OF OUR SPIRITUAL LEPROSY, sin!

11
And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee.

12
And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off:

13
And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.

14
And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.

15
And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God,

16
And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.

17
And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?

18
There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.

19
And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.

III. To fulfill the "royal law," is to "love thy neighbor as thyself"

 James 2:8

8
If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: Lev 19:18 Matt 5:43 Matt 19:19 Matt 22:39 Mark 12:31 Rom 13:9 Gal 5:14

a. the priest was not a neighbor

 Luke 10:25-31

25
And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

26
He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?

27
And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. Lev 19:18 Deut 6:5, 10:12 Mark 12:30 Matt 22:37

28
And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.

29
But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?

30
And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.

31
And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

B. the Levite was not a neighbor

 Luke 10:32

32
And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.

c. The Samaritan was a neighbor

 Luke 10:33-37

33
But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,

34
And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

35
And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.

36
Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?

37
And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.

Conclusion:

A. the Gospel is for all

 Romans 1:16

16
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

 Matthew 28:18-20

18
And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

19
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

20
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

B. race or nationality does not matter, what matters is for one to become a Christian

 Galatians 3:26-29

26
For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

27
For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

28
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

29
And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

EMPTY TOMB OR EMPTY FAITH

Luke 23:50-56

50
And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor; and he was a good man, and a just:

51
(The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God.

52
This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.

53
And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.

54
And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.

55
And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.

56
And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.

John 19:38-42

38
And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.

39
And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.

40
Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

41
Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.

42
There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.

I. Vain Precautions were taken to insure that Christ would not arise from the dead:

A. We are guaranteed that Jesus was actually dead:

1. His executioner declared Him dead

 Mark 15:39

39
And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.

2. The executioner's superior agreed that Jesus was dead

Mark 15:45

45
And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.

3. Scourging, loss of blood, shock and crucifixion guaranteed His death.

B. He was buried in a solid rock tomb

 John 19:41

41
Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.

1. It was a new tomb.

2. No one could dig into the tomb.

C. Giving Jesus a Jewish burial confirmed His death

 Mark 15:46

46
And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre.

1. His body was washed.

2. It was wrapped in linen strips.

D. The entrance to the tomb was covered with a large stone

Matthew 27:60

60
And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.

1. One large stone covered the 4-5 foot hole.

2. It weighed about 1-2 tons.

E. Roman guards were posted at the tomb

Matthew 27:65

65
Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.

1. There were four guards per shift.

2. Both the Romans and the Jews wanted to keep Jesus in the tomb.

F. The tomb was sealed and breaking the seal meant death

 Matthew 27:66

66
So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.

II . What could have happened to Jesus' body?

A. There is no debate even with unbelievers that Jesus' body was not in the tomb.

B. His enemies could have stolen the body but they would have produced it later in Acts 2:29-36.

29
Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.

30
Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; Ps 132:11 2 Sam 7:12,13

31
He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. Ps 16:10

32
This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.

33
Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.

34
For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,

35
Until I make thy foes thy footstool. Ps 110:1 Matt 22:44 Luke 20:42 1 Cor 15:25 Heb 1:13

36
Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made the same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

C. His friends could have stolen Jesus' body:

1. This was unlikely because of all the Roman precautions.

2. If His friends had stolen His body, He would have died for a hoax.

3. God raised Jesus from the dead

 I Corinthians 15:1-4

1
Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;

2
By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

3
For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

4
And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

Conclusion:

A. The resurrection is one event on which our faith depends

 II Timothy 2:8

8
Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel:

B. We believe by faith based on prophesy and faith that the God who created the laws of nature could choose to defy them with miracles.

C. We must realize that in baptism our sinful self dies, is buried and rises to walk a new life

 Romans 6:1-6

1
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

2
God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

3
Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

4
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

5
For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

6
Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
