Moses' Prayers

Introduction:

a. I Thessalonians 5:17 Paul said we must

"pray without ceasing"

b. This study will focus on THE PRAYERS of Moses in

Exodus 32:11-13

11
And Moses besought the LORD his God, and said, LORD, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand?

12
Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people.

13
Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever.

Exodus 32: 31-32

31
And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold.

32
Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin--; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.

and

Numbers 14:13-19

13
And Moses said unto the LORD, Then the Egyptians shall hear it, (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;)

14
And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou LORD art among this people, that thou LORD art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night.

15
Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying,

16
Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness.

17
And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my Lord be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying,

18
The LORD is long-suffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.

19
Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.

c. Notice – Exodus 32:14

14
And the LORD repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.

I. Moses prayed humbly:

A. Numbers 12:3 says Moses was the most humble man on earth, That humility IS SEEN in these prayers

3
(Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.)

B. Take a close look AT MOSES’ prayers in

Note: God’s initial plan was to destroy Israel and make a greater and mightier nation out of Moses

 Exodus 32:10

10
Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation.

 Numbers 14:12

12
I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.

II. Moses prayed for others more than himself:

A. After Moses dealt with the golden calf, he said,

“I am going up to the Lord, perhaps I can make atonement for your sin” -Exodus 32:30

What is amazing is that Moses did not just pray, “God forgive their sin.” He prayed,

“But now, if You will, forgive their sin—and if not please blot me out from Your book which You have written” - Exodus 32:32

B. Consider the sheer magnitude of that statement. Moses was saying he would rather be blotted out for Israel’s sin, than Israel be blotted out for it

C. Keep in mind for whom Moses was doing this. This was the people who had made him so angry that he cast down the tablets of the Law God had just given him and broke them in the sight of the people

 Exodus 32:19

19
And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses' anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount.

In Numbers 14:10, the people had been preparing to stone Moses

10
But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of the LORD appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.

III. Moses prayed for God’s will and glory, not his own:

A. Exodus 32:12

12
Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people.

and

Numbers 14:13-16

16
Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness.

demonstrate the heart of Moses’ humility. More than concern for himself, more than concern for his brethren, Moses’ prayer was driven by his concern for God and His glory. What would the pagan nations say if the people of Israel died in a day on their way from Egypt to Canaan?

b. Instead of thinking about the glory he could receive as father of the nation, Moses thought about the glory that would be taken from God

IV. Moses prayed from a holy life:

A. Though not explicitly stated, Exodus 32:32 demonstrates that Moses’ prayer stemmed from holy living

“But now, if You will, forgive their sin—and if not please blot me out from Your book which You have written”

B. Of course, Moses could not be the sinless sacrifice that Jesus would become. However, he was a man who had lived in holiness, who had lived according to God’s will

C. confession will always be a part of our prayers

 I John 1:9

9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

 Luke 18:13

13
And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.

WE must recognize that if we are harboring sin in our hearts, our prayers are not recognized by God

Isaiah 59:1-14

1
Behold, the LORD's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:

2
But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

3
For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness.

4
None calleth for justice, nor any pleadeth for truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.

5
They hatch cockatrice' eggs, and weave the spider's web: he that eateth of their eggs dieth, and that which is crushed breaketh out into a viper.

6
Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.

7
Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths. Rom 3:15,16 Prov 1:16

8
The way of peace they know not; and there is no judgment in their goings: they have made them crooked paths: whosoever goeth therein shall not know peace. Rom 3:17,18

9
Therefore is judgment far from us, neither doth justice overtake us: we wait for light, but behold obscurity; for brightness, but we walk in darkness.

10
We grope for the wall like the blind, and we grope as if we had no eyes: we stumble at noon day as in the night; we are in desolate places as dead men.

11
We roar all like bears, and mourn sore like doves: we look for judgment, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far off from us.

12
For our transgressions are multiplied before thee, and our sins testify against us: for our transgressions are with us; and as for our iniquities, we know them;

13
In transgressing and lying against the LORD, and departing away from our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood.

14
And judgment is turned away backward, and justice standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter.

V. Moses prayed based on God’s word:

A. When Moses prayed in Exodus 32:13, he could pray with faith that God would grant his request because he knew the promises God had made to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

13
Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever.

When Moses quoted these promises, he was not just speaking of these two specific promises; he was referencing all the promises God had made to his forefathers. All those promises, specifically the ones made to the 12 sons of Jacob in Genesis 49, could not be fulfilled if God started over with Moses. Moses’ prayer was successful because it was based on God’s own word

B. Interestingly, in Number 14:17,18,

Moses based his request on the word of the Lord revealed to him following the Golden Calf incident in Exodus 34:6,7

6
And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,

7
Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.

VI. Moses prayed as a priority:

1. Moses recounted both of these situations in Deuteronomy 9. According to Deuteronomy 9:18, 25, Moses prayed and neither ate bread nor drank water. These prayers were so important to him that he did not even eat

18
And I fell down before the LORD, as at the first, forty days and forty nights: I did neither eat bread, nor drink water, because of all your sins which ye sinned, in doing wickedly in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.

19
For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure, wherewith the LORD was wroth against you to destroy you. But the LORD hearkened unto me at that time also.

20
And the LORD was very angry with Aaron to have destroyed him: and I prayed for Aaron also the same time.

21
And I took your sin, the calf which ye had made, and burnt it with fire, and stamped it, and ground it very small, even until it was as small as dust: and I cast the dust thereof into the brook that descended out of the mount.

22
And at Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibrothhattaavah, ye provoked the LORD to wrath.

23
Likewise when the LORD sent you from Kadeshbarnea, saying, Go up and possess the land which I have given you; then ye rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God, and ye believed him not, nor hearkened to his voice.

24
Ye have been rebellious against the LORD from the day that I knew you.

25
Thus I fell down before the LORD forty days and forty nights, as I fell down at the first; because the LORD had said he would destroy you.

2. when Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, he first fasted – Matthew 4

VII. Moses prayed persistently:

A. In Deuteronomy 9:18, 25, not only did Moses fast and pray, but he did so for 40 days

25
Thus I fell down before the LORD forty days and forty nights, as I fell down at the first; because the LORD had said he would destroy you.

b. the prayer of a righteous man

 James 5:16-20

16
Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

17
Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.

18
And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.

19
Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him;

20
Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.

1 Peter 1

Conclusion:

a. do you think to pray?

b. Pray for others

 I Timothy 2:1-6

1
I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;

2
For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

3
For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;

4
Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

5
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

6
Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

c. Do so REGULARLY?

I THESSALONIANS 5:17

17
Pray without ceasing.

Evening Worship

IT IS GUARANTEED
I Corinthians 15:1-23

1
Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;

2
By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

3
For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

4
And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

5
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve:

6
After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.

7
After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles.

8
And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.

9
For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.

10
But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

11
Therefore whether it were I or they, so we preach, and so ye believed.

12
Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?

13
But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:

14
And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.

15
Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.

16
For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:

17
And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.

18
Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.

19
If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

20
But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.

21
For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.

22
For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

23
But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.

INTRODUCTION:

a. Matthew 26:56
"Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled"

b. I Peter 1:3
"begotten again unto a lively hope"

c. Three guarantees provided by the resurrection of Christ from I Corinthians 15

I. Guarantee of our savior

I Corinthians 15:1-23

1
Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;

2
By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

3
For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

A. Declares Jesus is the Son of God

Romans 1:4

4
And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:

B. All will die

Hebrews 9:27

27
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

C. Only Jesus conquered death - Consider the accounts of Enoch

Genesis 5:24

24
And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

 Hebrews 11:5

5
By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

 and Elijah

II Kings 2:11

11
And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

Although these men did not die, they did not conquer death in the sense that Jesus conquered death. These men were not dead and later resurrected

Jesus resurrection was a sign of his deity

 JOHN 2:18-22

18
Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?

19
Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

20
Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?

21
But he spake of the temple of his body.

22
When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.

 MATTHEW 12:40, 41

40
For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Jonah 1:17

41
The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.

II. Guarantee of our salvation

 I CORINTHIANS 15:17-20

A. If Christ were not raised, consider the consequences:

1. I CORINTHIANS 15:14 - our preaching is in vain

2. Our faith is in vain

 I CORINTHIANS 15:14

14
And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.

3. The apostles were liars

 I CORINTHIANS 15:15

15
Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.

4. We are yet in our sins

 I CORINTHIANS 15:17

17
And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.

5. Those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished without hope

 I CORINTHIANS 15:18

18
Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.

B. But Christ is risen from the dead

 I CORINTHIANS 15:1-4

1
Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;

2
By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

3
For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

4
And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

have forgiveness, hope

 I Peter 1:3,4

3
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

4
To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,

 joy

I John 1:4

4
And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.

III. Guarantee of our future state

 I CORINTHIANS 15:20-23

A. Christ the first fruits. Christ was the first fruit in that he did not die again after he was resurrected

B. Just as offering first fruits served as an acknowledgement that the whole harvest is possible because of God

Leviticus 23:10-16

10
Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye be come into the land which I give unto you, and shall reap the harvest thereof, then ye shall bring a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest unto the priest:

11
And he shall wave the sheaf before the LORD, to be accepted for you: on the morrow after the sabbath the priest shall wave it.

12
And ye shall offer that day when ye wave the sheaf an he lamb without blemish of the first year for a burnt offering unto the LORD.

13
And the meat offering thereof shall be two tenth deals of fine flour mingled with oil, an offering made by fire unto the LORD for a sweet savor: and the drink offering thereof shall be of wine, the fourth part of an hin.

14
And ye shall eat neither bread, nor parched corn, nor green ears, until the selfsame day that ye have brought an offering unto your God: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

15
And ye shall count unto you from the morrow after the sabbath, from the day that ye brought the sheaf of the wave offering; seven sabbaths shall be complete:

16
Even unto the morrow after the seventh sabbath shall ye number fifty days; and ye shall offer a new meat offering unto the LORD.

Christ being the "first fruit" of them that are asleep is an acknowledgement that our resurrection is possible because of Christ

C. In Adam all die

 Romans 5:12

12
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

but in Christ all shall be made alive

 Romans 5:17-19

17
For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)

18
Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

19
For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

D. We will one day be resurrected

 I Thessalonians 4:13-18

13
But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

14
For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

15
For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

16
For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

17
Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Deut 30:4 Matt 24:31

18
Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
