LIVING IN TWO WORLDS
Ecclesiastes 12:7
7
Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was:
and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
Introduction:
a. As human beings, we are keenly aware of the physical life
b. Many, to their detriment, don't consider the spiritual side of man
I. We all have two problems:
A. We all must die
Hebrews
9:27
27
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but
after this the judgment:
B. We all must be judged
II Corinthians 5:9-11
9
Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or
absent, we may be accepted of him.
10
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of
Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to
that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.
11
Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we
persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made
manifest in your consciences.
Romans
14:10
10
But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost
thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment
seat of Christ.
II. What must I do to prepare for the judgment?
A. I must live in the world
John 10:10
10
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to
kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they
might have it more abundantly.
I
Corinthians 15:57, 58
57
But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory
through our Lord Jesus Christ.
58
Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast,
unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know
that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
B. I must not let the world live in me
Titus 2:10-12
10
Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity;
that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.
11
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath
appeared to all men,
12
Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly
lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present
world;
John 17:10-18
10
And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I
am glorified in them.
11
And now I am no more in the world, but these are
in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name
those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.
12
While I was with them in the world, I kept them in
thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost,
but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.
13
And now come I to thee; and these things I speak
in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
14
I have given them thy word; and the world hath
hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the
world.
15
I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of
the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
16
They are not of the world, even as I am not of the
world.
17
Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is
truth.
18
As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have
I also sent them into the world.
III. Abraham is a man who did that successfully:
A. Abraham lived in Ur
Genesis 11:27
27
Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah
begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot.
Genesis 12:2
2
And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will
bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
B. Ur was his hometown and with which he was most familiar
C. He was a stranger in a secular city
D. He looked for city built by God which was permanent and WHOSE foundation
was God
Hebrews 11:8-11
8
By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out
into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and
he went out, not knowing whither he went.
9
By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as
in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the
heirs with him of the same promise:
10
For he looked for a city which hath foundations,
whose builder and maker is God.
11
Through faith also Sara herself received strength
to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age,
because she judged him faithful who had promised.
IV. When we serve God we can be like Abraham:
A. We do not belong to the world
John 15:18-21
18
If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me
before it hated you.
19
If ye were of the world, the world would love his
own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the
world, therefore the world hateth you.
20
Remember the word that I said unto you, The
servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will
also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.
21
But all these things will they do unto you for my
name's sake, because they know not him that sent me.
B. Our citizenship is in heaven
Philippians 3:20
20
For our conversation is in heaven; from whence
also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:
C. We set our hearts on things above
Colossians 3:1
1
If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things
which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
D. Our treasures are stored up in heaven
Matthew 6:19-21
19
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth,
where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20
But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven,
where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break
through nor steal:
21
For where your treasure is, there will your heart
be also.
1. THE world offers physical things which are temporary and will decay
2. Heaven is eternal where we will live with God and the redeemed forever
Matthew 25:46
46
And these shall go away into everlasting
punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.
I
Thessalonians 4:16-18
16
For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven
with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God:
and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17
Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught
up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so
shall we ever be with the Lord.
Deut 30:4
Matt 24:31
18
Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
Conclusion:
A. REMEMBER WE are heavenly citizens on earth for a little while
Job 14:1
1
Man that is born of a woman is of few days and
full of trouble.
B. Jesus is our passport to heaven
John 15:1-6
1
I am the true vine, and my Father is the
husbandman.
2
Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he
taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may
bring forth more fruit.
3
Now ye are clean through the word which I have
spoken unto you.
4
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot
bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye
abide in me.
5
I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that
abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without
me ye can do nothing.
6
If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a
branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire,
and they are burned.
Acts 5:10-12
10
Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and
yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and,
carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.
11
And great fear came upon all the church, and upon
as many as heard these things.
12
And by the hands of the apostles were many signs
and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in
Solomon's porch.
C. This world will never really satisfy us
Ecclesiastes 1:14
14
I have seen all the works that are done under the
sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

THE FOOLISH FARMER, THE FURIOUS SOLDIER, AND THE FAITHFUL WIFE
I
SAMUEL 25
introduction:
A. let us learn some lessons from three old testament characters
B. in so doing we will notice the sharp contrast between wise and foolish
actions!
I. Nabal - The Foolish Farmer
I
Samuel 25: 1-3
1
And Samuel died; and all the Israelites were
gathered together, and lamented him, and buried him in his house at Ramah.
And David arose, and went down to the wilderness of Paran.
2
And there was a man in Maon, whose possessions
were in Carmel; and the man was very great, and he had three thousand sheep,
and a thousand goats: and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel.
3
Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of
his wife Abigail: and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a
beautiful countenance: but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and
he was of the house of Caleb.
I Samuel 25: 10, 11
10
And Nabal answered David's servants, and said, Who
is David? and who is the son of Jesse? there be many servants now a days
that break away every man from his master.
11
Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my
flesh that I have killed for my shearers, and give it unto men, whom I know
not whence they be?
A. He was RICH, SURLY, and foolish
B. His servant said he was wicked and no one could talk to him
C. David provided protection for his family and all his goods
D. He refused to repay David for his protection and accused him of fighting
his master Saul
II. David - The Furious Soldier
I
Samuel 25:4-13
4
And David heard in the wilderness that Nabal did
shear his sheep.
5
And David sent out ten young men, and David said
unto the young men, Get you up to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in
my name:
6
And thus shall ye say to him that liveth in
prosperity, Peace be both to thee, and peace be to thine house, and peace be
unto all that thou hast.
7
And now I have heard that thou hast shearers: now
thy shepherds which were with us, we hurt them not, neither was there ought
missing unto them, all the while they were in Carmel.
8
Ask thy young men, and they will show thee.
Wherefore let the young men find favor in thine eyes: for we come in a good
day: give, I pray thee, whatsoever cometh to thine hand unto thy servants,
and to thy son David.
9
And when David's young men came, they spake to
Nabal according to all those words in the name of David, and ceased.
12
So David's young men turned their way, and went
again, and came and told him all those sayings.
13
And David said unto his men, Gird ye on every man
his sword. And they girded on every man his sword; and David also girded on
his sword: and there went up after David about four hundred men; and two
hundred abode by the stuff.
A. He was angry when he found out the farmer refused to help him and his
army
B. He took 400 soldiers to destroy Nabal and everything he owned
III. Abigail - The Faithful Wife:
A. She was intelligent and beautiful
I
Samuel 25:3
3
Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of
his wife Abigail: and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a
beautiful countenance: but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and
he was of the house of Caleb.
B. She was humble and gracious
I Samuel 25:23
23
And when Abigail saw David, she hasted, and
lighted off the ass, and fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to
the ground,
C. She was courageous and interceded with David to try and save her
husband's life
I
Samuel 25:14-19
14
But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's
wife, saying, Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to salute
our master; and he railed on them.
15
But the men were very good unto us, and we were
not hurt, neither missed we any thing, as long as we were conversant with
them, when we were in the fields:
16
They were a wall unto us both by night and day,
all the while we were with them keeping the sheep.
17
Now therefore know and consider what thou wilt do;
for evil is determined against our master, and against all his household:
for he is such a son of Belial, that a man cannot speak to him.
18
Then Abigail made haste, and took two hundred
loaves, and two bottles of wine, and five sheep ready dressed, and five
measures of parched corn, and an hundred clusters of raisins, and two
hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on asses.
19
And she said unto her servants, Go on before me;
behold, I come after you. But she told not her husband Nabal.
D. She was a Godly woman
I
Samuel 25: 28-31
28
I pray thee, forgive the trespass of thine
handmaid: for the LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house; because my
lord fighteth the battles of the LORD, and evil hath not been found in thee
all thy days.
29
Yet a man is risen to pursue thee, and to seek thy
soul: but the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with the
LORD thy God; and the souls of thine enemies, them shall he sling out, as
out of the middle of a sling.
30
And it shall come to pass, when the LORD shall
have done to my lord according to all the good that he hath spoken
concerning thee, and shall have appointed thee ruler over Israel;
31
That this shall be no grief unto thee, nor offense
of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed blood causeless, or that
my lord hath avenged himself: but when the LORD shall have dealt well with
my lord, then remember thine handmaid.
IV. Abigail Meets David
I Samuel 25: 20-34
20
And it was so, as she rode on the ass, that she
came down by the covert on the hill, and, behold, David and his men came
down against her; and she met them.
21
Now David had said, Surely in vain have I kept all
that this fellow hath in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all
that pertained unto him: and he hath requited me evil for good.
22
So and more also do God unto the enemies of David,
if I leave of all that pertain to him by the morning light any that pisseth
against the wall.
23
And when Abigail saw David, she hasted, and
lighted off the ass, and fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to
the ground,
24
And fell at his feet, and said, Upon me, my lord,
upon me let this iniquity be: and let thine handmaid, I pray thee, speak in
thine audience, and hear the words of thine handmaid.
25
Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard this man of
Belial, even Nabal: for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and
folly is with him: but I thine handmaid saw not the young men of my lord,
whom thou didst send.
26
Now therefore, my lord, as the LORD liveth, and as
thy soul liveth, seeing the LORD hath withholden thee from coming to shed
blood, and from avenging thyself with thine own hand, now let thine enemies,
and they that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.
27
And now this blessing which thine handmaid hath
brought unto my lord, let it even be given unto the young men that follow my
lord.
30
And it shall come to pass, when the LORD shall
have done to my lord according to all the good that he hath spoken
concerning thee, and shall have appointed thee ruler over Israel;
31
That this shall be no grief unto thee, nor offense
of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed blood causeless, or that
my lord hath avenged himself: but when the LORD shall have dealt well with
my lord, then remember thine handmaid.
32
And David said to Abigail, Blessed be the LORD God
of Israel, which sent thee this day to meet me:
33
And blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou,
which hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging
myself with mine own hand.
34
For in very deed, as the LORD God of Israel liveth,
which hath kept me back from hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come
to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light
any that pisseth against the wall.
A. She told David:
i. you are going to be the king
2. my husband is an insignificant foolish man
3. if you kill HIM, your conscience will bother all the days of your life
B. David's Response:
1. Praise to God - you kept me from shedding blood
2. after Nabal died ( at God's hand ) David took Abigail for his wife
I
Samuel 25:36-42
36
And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a
feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal's heart was merry
within him, for he was very drunken: wherefore she told him nothing, less or
more, until the morning light.
37
But it came to pass in the morning, when the wine
was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his
heart died within him, and he became as a stone.
38
And it came to pass about ten days after, that the
LORD smote Nabal, that he died.
39
And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said,
Blessed be the LORD, that hath pleaded the cause of my reproach from the
hand of Nabal, and hath kept his servant from evil: for the LORD hath
returned the wickedness of Nabal upon his own head. And David sent and
communed with Abigail, to take her to him to wife.
40
And when the servants of David were come to
Abigail to Carmel, they spake unto her, saying, David sent us unto thee, to
take thee to him to wife.
41
And she arose, and bowed herself on her face to
the earth, and said, Behold, let thine handmaid be a servant to wash the
feet of the servants of my lord.
42
And Abigail hasted, and arose and rode upon an
ass, with five damsels of hers that went after her; and she went after the
messengers of David, and became his wife.
CONCLUSION:
A. If we live like Nabal - we will die like him
B. Abigail lived above her circumstances and served God - she was rewarded
by God
C. David overreacted - after he repented God blessed him
