The Blood that stained the old rugged cross of Christ

Ephesians 1:3-13

3
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

4
According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

5
Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,

6
To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

7
In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

8
Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;

9
Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:

10
That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:

11
In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

12
That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.

13
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

Introduction:

a. God has blessed us tremendously through His Son. In Ephesians 1:11 WE read of the inheritance that we have through Jesus.

b. In Ephesians 1:13 we read that the Spirit was given to us as a seal of our inheritance.

c. All of these blessings are “in Christ” - Ephesians 1:3.

d. In Ephesians 1:7 WE read of the blessing that we have through the blood of Jesus.

e. There are many blessing that we can enjoy because of the blood of Christ:

1. By His blood He purchased the church - Acts 20:28.

2. By His blood we are brought near to Him -Ephesians 2:13.

3. By His blood we can have boldness to enter the holiest - Hebrews 10:19.

4. By His blood we also have the forgiveness of our sins - Ephesians 1:7.

I. Blood has always been important to God:

A. Life is in the blood - Genesis 9:4; Deuteronomy 12:23.

B. Blood protected the Israelites during the TENTH PLAGUE in Egypt - EXODUS 12:13.

C. The Israelites offered many sacrifices throughout the year to God, most of which included sprinkling of blood -

Exodus 29:21; Leviticus 16:14; HEBREWS 9:7.

D. Blood was required under the law to make atonement for the soul - LEVITICUS 17:11; Hebrews 9:22.

II. The blood of Christ forgives us of our sins:

A. We needed another sacrifice to take away our sins:

1. The blood of the Old Testament sacrifices were insufficient - Hebrews 10:1-4.

B. The sacrifice that we needed was Christ - Romans 3:25; Romans 5:6-11.

c. We needed the blood of Christ so that our sins could be forgiven - Matthew 26:28; I John 1:7;

Revelation 1:5

d. We are redeemed (bought back) by His blood - Ephesians 1:7; I Peter 1:17-19; Colossians 1:13, 14.

III. We must come into contact with the blood of Christ:

A. We must be “in Christ” to receive spiritual blessings in Christ - Ephesians 1:3, 7

B. How do we get to be “in Christ” and in contact with the blood of Jesus?

1. Acts 2:38 - Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you

be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

2. Acts 22:16 - 'And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized,

and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.'

3. Romans 6:3,4 - Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized

into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? {4} Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

4. Galatians 3:27 - For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

5. I Peter 3:21 - There is also an antitype which now saves us-- baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

Conclusion:

a. Are you in Christ?

b. Have you had the blood of His Son cleanse you of your sins?

c. Have you been baptized into His death for the remission of you sins?

Philippians 3:20,21

Philippians 4:1

i. A PURPOSE TO ACHIEVE- Philippians 3:20,21; Philippians 4:1:

a. Paul’s desire for them might be summed up in the words he wrote to the Christians in Rome - Romans 12:1,2.

b. And to the Christians in Colossae - Colossians 3:1,2.

II. Paul desired that they have a:

a. A Heavenly Place -“For your citizenship is in heaven” - Philippians 3:20.

1. As such we are “resident aliens” - citizens of one country residing in another - Hebrews 11:13; I Peter 2:11.

2. Song: “This world is not my home…”

b. Paul also wanted them to set their minds on A Heavenly Person – Philippians 1:21.

“whence also we wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ” - Philippians 3: 20:

1. We need to focus our hearts of Jesus and eagerly look for His coming - JOHN 14:1-6

c. A Heavenly Purpose:

1. When the Lord returns amazing things will occur – one of which is described in our present context.

2. Philippians 3:21 - Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

3. At the Lord’s coming our earthly bodies will be transformed into a spiritual body like our Lord’s - I John 3:2.

4. The point is, why center your attention on the flesh when the flesh is going to be changed? – I Corinthians 15:50-58.

5. Our hearts must be set on the heavenly purpose – the transformation of our lowly bodies.

d. A Heavenly Power:

1. Is Christ capable of the dramatic change just discussed?

2. “according to the working whereby he is able even to subject all things unto himself” - Philippians 3:21.

note: How much power does Jesus have?

1. Matthew 28:18.

2. Ephesians 1:22.

3. Hebrews 1:3.

4. “…subdue all things unto himself” -Philippians 3:21.

e. A Heavenly Precept - Philippians 4:1:

1. “Stand fast” in the path he has just described

2. What will enable us to do this? We must stand fast in Christ - Ephesians 6:10.

CONCLUSION:

A. ALL EARTHLY things are destined to perish - Colossians 2:22; II Corinthians 4:18; Matthew 6:19-21.

b. Where then should we set our minds?

c. We may be earth-based, but let us determine to be heaven-bound!
