FATHER’S DAY 2008
Ephesians 6:1-4
1
Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
2
Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;
3
That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.
4
And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in
the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
INTRODUCTION:
a. Every year we declare one Sunday in May and one in June as special days
for both parents. These dates should be reminders to those who love the Lord
in urging us to honor parents throughout the year.
B. As we set our sights to honor our fathers today we need to remember that
“honor” means "to fix a value on" or, “a prize to cherish.” The word is
always used in reference to what is reverenced or esteemed highly.
c. this father’s day is a first for me in that my father is no longer with
me.
I. WE ARE TO BE AS OUR HEAVENLY FATHER
Luke11:10-13
10
For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him
that knocketh it shall be opened.
11
If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a
stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?
12
Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?
13
If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how
much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask
him?
A. The nature of God as Heavenly
that of Father: He’s CALLED “Father!” He “cares for His children
like a Father!” He “loves His family like a Father!” He “hears their
petitions and cares for their needs like a FATHER!”
B. Here is a perfect model given to imperfect beings, to help us learn about
fatherhood!
II. THE KIND OF FATHER GOD WANTS:
A. One who always listens to his children, and grants those things that are
best for them – not only PHYSICALLY, but especially SPIRITUALLY, that meets
the needs of the eternal part of every being!
1. I Peter 3:12
12
For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto
their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.
2. Most foolish father in existence is the one who shuts out a child
II Samuel 14:28
28
So Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem, and saw not the king's face
B. A father who has true affection! Paul says that there ARE SOME do not
Romans 1:31
31
Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection,
implacable, unmerciful
1. God's love is demonstrated in
what He gives and what He withholds
John 3:16
16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life
I Peter 5:5
5
Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be
subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the
proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
2. A father's gift to his
children: REAL time spent with them [NOT just so-called “quality” time!];
true love for family.
3. God's love
Psalm 127:3
3
Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his
reward.
C. A father who disciplines with
love:
1.
Psalm 6:1,2
1
To the chief Musician on Neginoth upon Sheminith, A Psalm of David. O LORD,
rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.
2
Have mercy upon me, O LORD; for I am weak: O LORD, heal me; for my bones are
vexed.
2.
Proverbs 19:18
18
Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his
crying.
3. Will be teaching. training, and
educating his children, IN A WAY THAT PLEASES GOD, the following things:
a) The principles of divine revelation, which are able to make even the
youngest wise unto salvation
II Timothy 3:15
15
And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to
make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
b) To "desire the sincere milk of
the word" in order to survive and grow
I Peter 2:1,2
1
Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and
envies, and all evil speakings,
2
As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow
thereby:
c) To study and practice the “word
of God which is able to save their souls”
James 1:21
21
Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and
receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls
d) To secure an eternal
inheritance through the word of God
Acts 20:32
32
And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which
is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which
are sanctified.
D. A Father who provides for the
needs of his own:
1. More than allowances, cars,
clothes.
2. Children need the companionship and friendship of parents: an arm to lean
on, a hand to help.
3. Children need a father who loves them enough to provide guidance
Psalm 32:8
8
I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will
guide thee with mine eye.
Psalm 34:11
11
Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
Proverbs 4:1
1
Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know
understanding.
III. FATHER: A TITLE OF HONOR:
A. When someone speaks of the “Father of our country,” everyone knows
they’re speaking of George Washington. If one should speak of the “Father of
our constitution,” they’d be talking about James Madison.
B. In the Bible, Abraham, is referred to as the “father of faithful.”
Romans 4:12,16
12
And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only,
but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he
had being yet uncircumcised.
16
Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise
might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to
that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,
C. Our nation needs to be finally
awakened to the need for fathers who will provide all that is needed for
their children.
D. A FATHER CAN BE ABSENT WHILE STILL AT HOME:
1. The responsibility must be taken most seriously – by the father/ mother/
children.
2. God will hold all who produce children accountable for the fatherhood, or
stewardship, ofthose children! HE HAS SIMPLY ENTRUSTED THEM TO US FOR
DEVELOPMENT
Genesis 33:5
5
And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, Who
are those with thee? And he said, The children which God hath graciously
given thy servant.
Psalm 103:13,14
13
Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear
him.
14
For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.
CONCLUSION:
a. No man holds such power over a mighty river or stream as he who stands
where it begins.
b. Best thing for any father: Try to be the kind of man you are raising your
children to be!

GOD CHOSE A FATHER
Matthew 1:18-25
18
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was
espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of
the Holy Ghost.
19
Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a
public example, was minded to put her away privily.
20
But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared
unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take
unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy
Ghost.
21
And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he
shall save his people from their sins.
22
Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the
Lord by the prophet, saying,
23
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they
shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
24
Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden
him, and took unto him his wife:
25
And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called
his name JESUS.
Introduction:
a. This is the day this country chose to honor fathers. Certainly it is
right to honor fathers
Ephesians 6:1,2
1
Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
2
Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;
b. Today we want to review the life of a man God chose to be the father of
His only begotten Son. Out of his hometown, Joseph was probably unknown. He
was just a carpenter in an unimportant town.
c. Why did God choose such a man for such an important position? What
attributes did he possess?
I. HE WAS A JUST MAN (righteous, innocent, holy)
Matthew 1:19
19
Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a
public example, was minded to put her away privily.
a. Noah was a “just” man
Genesis 6:9
9
These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his
generations, and Noah walked with God.
B. “The just man walketh in his integrity”
Proverbs 20:7
7
The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.
II. HE WAS A COMPASSIONATE and MERCIFUL MAN
Matthew 1:19
19
Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a
public example, was minded to put her away privily.
A. He could have demanded Mary be stoned to death
Deuteronomy 22:23,24
22
If a man be found lying with a woman married to an husband, then they shall
both of them die, both the man that lay with the woman, and the woman: so
shalt thou put away evil from Israel.
23
If a damsel that is a virgin be betrothed unto an husband, and a man find
her in the city, and lie with her;
24
Then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall
stone them with stones that they die; the damsel, because she cried not,
being in the city; and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbour's
wife: so thou shalt put away evil from among you.
b. He didn't even want to make her a public example
Matthew 1:19
19
Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a
public example, was minded to put her away privily.
III. HE WAS A DEVOTED HUSBAND:
A. He believed in Mary's innocence
Matthew 1:24
24
Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden
him, and took unto him his wife:
b. He provided for her reputation and comfort
Luke 2:1-7
1
And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar
Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.
2
(And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
3
And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
4
And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into
Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was
of the house and lineage of David:)
5
To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
6
And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that
she should be delivered.
7
And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling
clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the
inn.
I Timothy 5:8
8
But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own
house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
B. He “knew her not until after the child was born
MATTHEW 1:25
25
And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called
his name JESUS.
IV. HE WAS A DEVOUT MAN:
A. He never disobeyed God's angel
B. He kept the law of God
Luke 2:21-43
21
And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his
name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was
conceived in the womb.
22
And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were
accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;
23
(As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb
shall be called holy to the Lord;)
24
And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the
Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.
25
And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the
same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the
Holy Ghost was upon him.
26
And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see
death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.
27
And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in
the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,
28
Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,
29
Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:
30
For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
31
Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;
32
A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.
33
And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of
him.
34
And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child
is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which
shall be spoken against;
35
(Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of
many hearts may be revealed.
36
And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe
of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years
from her virginity;
37
And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not
from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.
38
And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake
of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.
39
And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord,
they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.
40
And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the
grace of God was upon him.
41
Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.
42
And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom
of the feast.
43
And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus
tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.
C. He taught his children the ways of the Lord -
Deuteronomy 4:10
10
Specially the day that thou stoodest before the
LORD thy God in Horeb, when the LORD said unto me, Gather me the people
together, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me
all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach
their children.
Deuteronomy 6:5-9
5
And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all
thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
Deut 10:12
Matt 22:37
Mark 12:30
Luke 10:27
6
And these words, which I command thee this day,
shall be in thine heart:
7
And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy
children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when
thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
8
And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine
hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.
9
And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy
house, and on thy gates.
V. HE WAS A LOVING FATHER:
a. He took the full responsibility of raising God's son as his own
Luke 2:48
48
And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son,
why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee
sorrowing.
B. He put his own life in jeopardy to save Jesus
Matt. 2:13-18
13
And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to
Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother,
and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod
will seek the young child to destroy him.
14
When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed
into Egypt:
15
And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was
spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my
son.
16
Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding
wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and
in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the
time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.
17
Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying,
18
In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great
mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted,
because they are not.
C. He raised his children to be righteous-at least two sons were Christians
Matthew 13:55
55
Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his
brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?
Galatians 1:19
19
But other of the apostles saw I none, save James the Lord's brother.
Jude 1:1
1
Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are
sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called:
VI. You announce what you want your child to be by:
a. The way you teach them God's word
Ephesians 6:4
4
And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in
the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
Titus 2:1-5
1
But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:
2
That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in
patience.
3
The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not
false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
4
That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to
love their children,
5
To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own
husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
b. The example you set
I Corinthians 11:1
1
Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.
I Timothy 4:11-13
11
These things command and teach.
12
Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in
word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
13
Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
c. The plans you make for him
Psalm 127:3-5
3
Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his
reward.
4
As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.
5
Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be
ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.
CONCLUSION:
a. God intended that children would have a father that, not only would
provide for their physical needs but, would lead them in the paths of
righteousness And would be an example of a devoted mate to their mother.
b.This is the kind of man that God would chose for every child.
