for Heaven
II
Corinthians 5:1-10
1
For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved,
we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the
heavens.
2
For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our
house which is from heaven:
3
If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked.
4
For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for
that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be
swallowed up of life.
5
Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath
given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.
6
Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home
in the body, we are absent from the Lord:
7
(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
8
We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body,
and to be present with the Lord.
9
Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted
of him.
10
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every
one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done,
whether it be good or bad.
Introduction:
a. We ought to greatly desire heaven.
b. home of the soul.
c. Only place that is worth having.
I. Many AREN’T longing FOR HEAVEN BECAUSE:
a. Trying to make heaven on earth
Philippians
3:20,21
20
For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the
Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:
21
Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his
glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue
all things unto himself.
1. Song: This world is not my home; I’m just a passing through.
2. Remember we are pilgrims in this world
I
Peter 2:11
11
Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from
fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
3. This earth won’t last
II
Peter 3:7-12
7
But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept
in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of
ungodly men.
8
But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with
the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count
slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should
perish, but that all should come to repentance.
10
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which
the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt
with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be
burned up.
11
Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of
persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
12
Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the
heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with
fervent heat?
4.
Hebrews 12:16 - Esau sold birthright for “morsel of meat”.
16
Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one
morsel of meat sold his birthright.
5.
II Corinthians 4:16-18 - outer perish; inner renewed
16
For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the
inward man is renewed day by day.
17
For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a
far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;
18
While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which
are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things
which are not seen are eternal.
6.
II Corinthians 5:1-6 - tabernacle is temporary, look for the eternal.
Hebrews
11:10 Abraham looked for city, eternal in the heavens.
10
For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker
is God.
b. This earth can’t satisfy us
I
John 2:15-17
15
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man
love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the
eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17
And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the
will of God abideth for ever.
1. Solomon’s experiments under the sun - all is vanity – Ecclesiastes
1:13-18.
2. Man recently died going back into his burring house to retrieve moth and
rust items.
c. Our image of heaven is distorted:
a. What Paul saw –
II
Corinthians 12:2-4
2
I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I
cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such
an one caught up to the third heaven.
3
And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I
cannot tell: God knoweth;)
4
How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words,
which it is not lawful for a man to utter.
and what Paul knew he would receive
II
Timothy 1:12
12
For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not
ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able
to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
II
Timothy 4:6-8
6
For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at
hand.
7
I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the
faith:
8
Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the
Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only,
but unto all them also that love his appearing.
b. ONE man asked concerning some things, that will not be in heaven, (for
example sports and food) his response: “Heaven Would Be Hell”, how sad.
c. Notice some things that will not be there, thank the Lord
Revelation
21:4
4
And
God
shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more
death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for
the former things are passed away. Isa 25:8
ii. WE SHOULD BE longing FOR HEAVEN BECAUSE:
a. So we can enjoy this life
Philippians
1:23
23
For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be
with Christ; which is far better:
Depart and with Christ is “far better”
John
10:10
10
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I
am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more
abundantly.
b. Be content with what we have
Philippians 4:11-13
11
Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever
state I am, therewith to be content.
12
I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and
in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to
abound and to suffer need.
13
I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
c. Keep ourselves ready to go there
I
John 3:1-3
1
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we
should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not,
because it knew him not.
2
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we
shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for
we shall see him as he is.
3
And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he
is pure.
Romans 8:18-39
18
For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to
be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
19
For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the
manifestation of the sons of God.
20
For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by
reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,
21
Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of
corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
22
For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain
together until now.
23
And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the
Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption,
to wit, the redemption of our body.
24
For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a
man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?
25
But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for
it.
26
Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what
we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession
for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
27
And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit,
because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
28
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love
God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
29
For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to
the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
30
Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he
called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also
glorified.
31
What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be
against us?
32
He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how
shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
33
Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that
justifieth.
34
Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is
risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh
intercession for us.
35
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or
distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
36
As it is written,
For
thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the
slaughter. Psa 44:22
37
Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that
loved us.
38
For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor
principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39
Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate
us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
d. Encourage others to go there
I
Peter 3:15
15
But
sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an
answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with
meekness and fear: Isa 8:13
I
Peter 2:12
12
Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they
speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they
shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.
Conclusion:
a. which way are you headed?
b. The choice should be clear.
c. This world is not my home …

Reminders
Genesis 9:8-17
8
And God spake unto Noah, and to his sons with him, saying,
9
And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed
after you;
10
And with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the
cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of
the ark, to every beast of the earth.
11
And I will establish my covenant with you, neither shall all flesh be
cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a
flood to destroy the earth.
12
And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me
and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual
generations:
13
I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant
between me and the earth.
14
And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the
bow shall be seen in the cloud:
15
And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every
living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to
destroy all flesh.
16
And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may
remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of
all flesh that is upon the earth.
17
And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant, which I have
established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth.

b. Song – Standing on
C. Two things necessary for a rainbow:
1. A disturbance (storm, rain, thunder) in heaven.
2. Sunlight (hope) on earth.
D. Notice some Facts about the Rainbow:
i. Man did not ask for the rainbow, it was all God’s idea:
a. Covenants with God are not DEMANDED!
b. God (in His kindness and grace) OFFERS, PROMISES.
c. We have the choice to accept and believe OR reject AND REFUSE
Mark

b. Song – Standing on the Promises of God
c. When God promises – He keeps His promises.
d. Man can not destroy the promise:
1. Esther 4:14 – For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief
and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your
father’s house will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the
kingdom for such a time as this?”
2. Luke 19:40 – But He answered and said to them, “I tell you that if these

all flesh that is upon the earth.
iv. THE rainbow touches heaven and earth:
a. Heaven – constant reminder of the covenant.
b. Earth – We also remember (comforted) in the promise.
V. Nobody has ever seen a complete rainbow:
a. I Corinthians 2:9 – But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has

c. I Kings 10:7 – However I did not believe the words until I came and saw
with my own eyes; and indeed the half was not told me. Your wisdom and
prosperity exceed the fame of which I heard.

b. Think about the great treasure the rainbow represents and the treasure
that can ours from the source of the rainbow, a home with God in heaven
Revelation 2:10
10

shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have
tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a
crown of life.
