Some Great mysteries

Introduction:

a. many enjoy reading mystery novels

b. how many times have you watched a mystery Movie and tried to discover who “did it” before the answer was revealed?

c. There are some very important matters that still remain mysteries to many

d. Yet they are fully revealed in the Bible!

I. The New Testament refers to these mysteries:

a. The mystery of Christ and his church

Ephesians 5:32

32
This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

b. The mystery of lawlessness

II Thessalonians 2:7

7
For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

c. The mystery of the seven stars and seven candlesticks

 Revelation 1:20

20
The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.

d. The mystery of the resurrection

 I Corinthians 15:51

51
Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,

e. The mystery of the blindness of Israel

Romans 11:25

25
For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

f. The mystery of the harlot church

Revelation 17:5

5
And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.

g. The mysteries of the kingdom of heaven

 Matthew 13:10-17

10
And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?

11
He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

12
For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.

13
Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.

14
And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: Isa 6:9 John 12:40 Acts 28:26

15
For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. Isa 6:10 Mark 4:12 Acts 28:27

16
But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.

17
For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

ii. Great mysteries:

A. The mystery of godliness

 I Timothy 3:16

16
And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

b. The mystery

 Romans 16:25

25
Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,

c. The mystery of his will

 Ephesians 1:9

9
Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:

d. The mystery of Christ

 Ephesians 3:4

4
Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)

e. The mystery of the gospel

 Ephesians 6:19

19
And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,

f. The mystery of God

 Colossians 2:2,3

2
That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;

3
In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

g. The mystery of faith

I Timothy 3:9

9
Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.

Conclusion:

A. I Peter 1:10-12

10
Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:

11
Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.

12
Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.

B. can know the mystery has been revealed

C. don’t allow God’s will to remain a “mystery” to you, trust and obey

The faith of Abel

Genesis 4:1-8

1
And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.

2
And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

3
And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.

4
And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:

5
But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

6
And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?

7
If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

8
And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

Introduction:

a. brothers can be something else

 Matthew 10:36

36
And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. Mic 7:6

b. The brothers of Joseph

 Genesis 37:19-28

19
And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh.

20
Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.

21
And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.

22
And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again.

23
And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stripped Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colors that was on him;

24
And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.

25
And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmaelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.

26
And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?

27
Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.

28
Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.

c. The brothers of Jesus

 John 7:5

5
For neither did his brethren believe in him.

d. The brother of Abel

I. This story is looked on as a tragedy:

a. Murder is hideous and revolting. (It denies the victim many rights).
b. Cain's punishment shows God's great displeasure to the act

 Genesis 4:9-16

9
And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?

10
And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.

11
And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;

12
When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.

13
And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.

14
Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.

15
And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.

16
And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

c. But Abel's story is really one of triumph

 Hebrews 11:4

4
By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.

II. Consider:

a. What motivated Abel's faithful obedience?

b. Who did he please in worship?
c. he Did not let his brother influence him to "add to the word of God"

III. LESSON: Hebrews 11:4 - By Faith, Abel:
A. offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain:

1. His "works" were righteous

 I John 3:12

12
Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.

2. We have sacrifices to offer

 I Peter 2:1-5:

1
Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, all evil speakings,

2
As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

3
If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

4
To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,

5
Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

a. Hebrews 13:15,16

15
By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.

16
But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

b. Philippians 4:18

18
But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God.

c. Romans 12:1,2

1
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

2
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

B. through which sacrifice he had witness borne to him that he was righteous, God bearing witness in respect of his gifts:

1. For sin, we do not make a sacrifice, as Abel did. Jesus made the blood sacrifice for us

Romans 4:25

25
Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

a. The offering for sins made for us by Christ is better than that of Abel's

Hebrews 12:22-28

22
But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,

23
To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,

24
And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things that that of Abel.

25
See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:

26
Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven. Haggai 2:6 Exod 19:18

27
And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. Haggai 2:6

28
Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:

b. Yet we have God’s witness that eternal life is in His son, when we believe and obey

 I John 5:9-12

9
If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.

10
He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.

11
And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

12
He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

c. The Spirit bears witness, also:
(1) That "we are the children of God."

Romans 8:14-17

14
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

15
For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

16
The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

17
And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

(2) That we are "sealed" and receivers of "the earnest of of our inheritance"

 Ephesians 1:12-14

12
That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.

13
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

14
Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

C. Through it (the witness that he was righteous) he being dead yet speaketh:

1. Abel is a dead example, but the living are commanded to be like examples.
2. Paul wanted to be an example of obedience, whether living or dead

 Philippians 1:19,20

19
For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

20
According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.

Conclusion:

A. We admire the obedient faith of Abel

B. He received his reward in death:

1. We must be "faithful unto death," for the "crown of life."

Revelation 2:10

10
Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.

2. We can learn this patience from the "heroes of faith"

 Hebrews 11:13-16

13
These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

14
For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.

15
And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.

16
But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.
