Sermon Notes 13 August 2006 Audio
Morning Worship The Great Commission a. Authority, simply defined, is “the right to exercise power.” b. In the New Testament, we are clearly and constantly told to respect the authority of Jesus Christ, since He has been given all authority Colossians 3:17 Philippians 2:9-11 Matthew 28:18 II. JESUS Christ is our authority: A. HE has authority because He is deity Colossians 1:16,17 b. He demonstrated it in His miracles John 20:30,31 c. He demonstrated it in His teaching Matthew 7:28,29 d. He delegated it to His apostles Acts 1 Acts 2 iii. The apostles preached Jesus: a. This heading refers to the fact that the apostles knew their authority was delegated so they made it clear the things they taught were from heaven through Jesus the Lord Acts 2:22-36 Acts 4:9-12 b. We are to follow the same pattern today II TIMOTHY 2:2 iv. The alternative: Another authority? A. When people began to follow another authority, they quickly fell into apostasy -predicted in I Timothy 4:1-3 II Timothy 3:1 II Timothy 4:5 B. The Old Testament is filled with warnings Isaiah 5:13 Hosea 4:6 c. Following any other authority creates a false faith with terrible results Galatians 1:6-10 v. Objections to the authority of Jesus: a. In order to undermine or escape the authority of Jesus through His written word, people have invented many objections b. We need to learn how to recognize them so we can answer them with the “truth in love.” C. No other authority is reliable in helping people live in a way that is pleasing to God vi. What does it produce? a. The authority of Jesus will produce today exactly what it produced from the beginning of the Christian era. 1. It produced unity in answer to the Lord’s prayer John 17:20,21 Ephesians 4:1-16 Romans 15:6 I Corinthians 1:10 2. It produced the fruit of the spirit in the lives of the saints Galatians 5:22,23 II Peter 1:5-7
