WHY SALVATION IS NEEDED BY MAN

Romans 6:23

23
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

 Isaiah 53:6

6
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. 1 Pet 2:25

Genesis 3

Introduction:

a. To understand man's need of salvation, we must study concerning the fall of man

b. This event is referred to in various places in the Bible, but the historical record is found in Genesis 3

I. MAN'S CONDITION BEFORE HE SINNED:

A. Man Was Created in The Image of God

 Genesis 1:27

27
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. Matt 19:4 Mark 10:6

1. Man is a spiritual being

John 4:24

24
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

 Hebrews 12:9

9
Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?

 Proverbs 20:27

27
The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

 Ecclesiastes 12:7

7
Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

2. Man is endowed with the knowledge of reason

 Genesis 2:19, 20

19
And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.

20
And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.

 Colossians 3:10

10
And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

3. Imbued with uprightness and holiness

 Ecclesiastes 7:29

29
Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.

 Ephesians 4:24

24
And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

4. With conscience which either excuses or accuses

 Romans 2:15

15
Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)

5. With a freewill, having the power of choice

6. Capacity for worship and communion with God

7. With immortality of the soul

 Genesis 2:7

7
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. 1 Cor 15:45

B. Man Was a Possessor of Life

 Genesis 2:15-17

15
And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

16
And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

17
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

C. Their Innocence

 Genesis 2:25

25
And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

II. THE CONFUSION INTRODUCED BY SATAN'S TEMPTING MAN TO SIN

 Genesis 3:1-5

1
Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

2
And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

3
But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

4
And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

5
For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

Satan is jealous of God's glory and power. Therefore he set out to confuse and destroy God's supreme creation

A. Satan and the Word of God:

1. He questions God's Word

 Genesis 3:1

1
Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

2. He denied God's Word

 Genesis 3:4

4
And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

3. Satan has his agents today

 II Corinthians 11:13-15

13
For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.

14
And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

15
Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

B. He Slandered God's Love

 Genesis 3:5

5
For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

He implied that God was withholding a blessing from man whom he created

C. He Beguiled Eve

 Genesis 3:13

13
And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

d. he blinds

II Corinthians 4:3,4

3
But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:

4
In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

e. he binds

 II Timothy 2:26

26
And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

III. THE CHOICE OF MAN TO SIN:

A. Why Man Yielded to Temptation:

1. Disobedience because of lust and covetousness

 Genesis 3: 6

6
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

I John 2:15-17

15
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

16
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

17
And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

2. Rebellion because of unbelief - Satan was believed instead of God

 Mark 16:15, 16

15
And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

16
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

B. The Kind of Choice Made by Man:

1. It was a voluntary choice

Genesis 3: 6

6
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

I Timothy 2:14

14
And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

2. Man is still choosing to sin today

 Romans 1:32

32
Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

IV. THE CONSEQUENCES OF MAN'S SIN:

A. A Drastic Change Was Wrought:

1. Man became alienated from God

 Genesis 3:8

8
And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

 Ephesians 2:12

12
That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:

2. Physical judgment

Genesis 3:16-19

16
Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

17
And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

18
Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;

19
In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

Genesis 3:23,24

23
Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.

24
So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

3. Physical death

Genesis 3:19

19
In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

4. Spiritual and eternal death was the supreme consequence

Genesis 2:17

17
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

 Ezekiel 18:4

4
Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die

B. Because of the fall, All Men Are in Need of Salvation:

1. Romans 5:12

12
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

2. Ephesians 2:1

1
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

3. John 3:36

36
He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

Conclusion:

A. believe God or Satan?

B. believe the bible or man concerning sin?

C. Trust and obey

SALVATION COULD ONLY BE PROVIDED BY GOD

Isaiah 53:6

6
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. 1 Pet 2:25

II Corinthians 5:21

21
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Introduction:

a. no dispensation has man ever been able to save himself

b. Neither the O.T. nor N.T. record a single instance of man saving himself through any meritorious good deed or religious ceremony

I . MAN HAS NEVER BEEN ABLE TO SAVE HIMSELF:

A. Because God Demands Total Righteousness:

1. The old law couldn’t give righteousness, it can only bring judgment upon those who break the law

 Galatians 3:10,11

10
For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
Deut 27:26 James 2:10

11
But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.
Hab 2:4 Rom 1:17

2. The law demands absolute obedience

Romans 10:5

5
For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them. Lev 18:5 Gal 3:12

3. Self righteousness is not good enough

 Matthew 5:20

20
For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

B. Because By Nature, Man Cannot Comply:

1. The fleshly nature of man can never please God

Romans 8:3

3
For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

2. The fleshly man does not seek God - He hides just as Adam did

 Romans 3:9-12

9
What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;

10
As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: Psa 14:1, 53:1 Ecc 7:20

11
There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. Psa 14:2, 53:2

12
They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. Psa 14:3, 53:3

3. The law was meant to stop the mouth of boasting man

 Romans 3:19,20

19
Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

20
Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

C. Because Having Come Short, Man Is Condemned:

1. Sinful man always comes up short

 Romans 3:23

23
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

2. Break one commandment and you are guilty of being a lawbreaker

 James 2:10

10
For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. Deut 27:26 Gal 3:10

II. GOD'S REDEMPTION PROMISED THROUGH THE REDEEMER:

Note:
The central theme of the Bible is Jesus Christ and Him crucified. Throughout the Old Testament, we see Christ in the sacrifices, types and prophecies

A. Promised By Prophecy:

1. The very first prophecy promises a redeemer

 Genesis 3:15

15
And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

2. This redeemer was purposed before the foundation of the world

 I Peter 1:18-20

18
Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;

19
But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

20
Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,

B. Promised By Type:

1. The coats of skin, which involved the death of an innocent animal

 Genesis 3:21

21
Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

2. 2. Abel's offering

 Genesis 4:4

4
And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:

3. Noah's ark

 Genesis 7:23

23
And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.

3. The Passover Lamb

Exodus 12:13

13
And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.

 John 1:29

29
The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

I Corinthians 5:7

7
Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:

4. The substitute ram which took the place of Isaac

 Genesis 22:13

13
And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.

III. THE PROMISED REDEMPTION MADE

Galatians 4:4,5

4
But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,

5
To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

A. The Redeemer Came Into The World:

1. He existed in all of eternity passed

 John 1:1,2

1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2
The same was in the beginning with God.

John 1:10-14

10
He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

11
He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

12
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

13
Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

14
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

2. He came to this world to save

 Luke 19:10

10
For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

 Mark 10:45

45
For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

B. The Redeemer Lived A Perfect Life:

1. He never committed sin

 I Peter 2:22

22
Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: Isa 53:9

2. He was tempted, but he never sinned

 Hebrews 4:15

15
For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

3. He always pleased the Father, and no man could justly accuse Him of sin.

John 8:29

29
And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.

 John 8:46

46
Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?

C. The Redeemer Died In Our Place:

1. A voluntary death

 John 10:15-18

15
As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.

16
And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

17
Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.

18
No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

 Isaiah 53:7

7
He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. Acts 8:32

2. A substitutionary death

 Isaiah 53:11

11
He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.

 II Corinthians 5:21

21
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

I Corinthians 15:3

3
For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

3. A sufficient sacrifice for complete redemption

Hebrews 10:9-14

9
Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. Psa 40:7

10
By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

11
And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:

12
But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;

13
From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.

14
For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

 I John 1:7

7
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

I Peter 2:24,25

24
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. Isa 53:5

25
For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls. Isa 53:6

D. The Redeemer Rose Again

I Corinthians 15:4

4
And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

 Romans 4:24,25

24
But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;

25
Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

 Romans 8:34

34
Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

Conclusion:

a. God has made provisions for you salvation

b. You cannot do it of your own merits

c. Why not come to Jesus now for salvation?
