No Small Stir
Acts 19:23-2823
And the same time there arose no small stir about that way.
24
For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver
shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen;
25
Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said,
Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth.
26
Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost
throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people,
saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:
27
So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but
also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her
magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.
28
And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried
out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.
INTRODUCTION:
a. "no small stir" means "a great stir":
1. The cause of it – "that way"
Acts
19:99
But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that
way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the
disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.
2. They imprisoned those of the way
Acts
9:22
And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he
found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them
bound unto Jerusalem.
3. They persecuted this way
Acts 22:4
4
And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into
prisons both men and women.
b. Background – Diana, not just an idol – the foundation of their economy-
Bring in the gospel = disrupt the financial security of Ephesus.
c. The gospel was turning their world upside down
Acts
17:66
And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto
the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down
are come hither also;
d. God expects the Gospel to cause a stir!
I. The Nature of the Gospel Produces a Stir:
a. Comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable
Acts 16:25-34
25
And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and
the prisoners heard them.
26
And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of
the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every
one's bands were loosed.
27
And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the
prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself,
supposing that the prisoners had been fled.
28
But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are
all here.
29
Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell
down before Paul and Silas,
30
And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
31
And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be
saved, and thy house.
32
And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in
his house.
33
And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes;
and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.
34
And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them,
and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.
Acts 24:25
25
And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come,
Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a
convenient season, I will call for thee.
b. Dispel darkness with light
Matthew 5:1414
Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be
hid.
c. Spread purity among the immoral
Titus 2:10-1210
Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the
doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.
11
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
12
Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live
soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
d. Convicts of SIN among those who love sin
Romans 1:3232
Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are
worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do
them.
e. Teaches truth where error is espoused
Acts 17:30,31
30
And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all
men every where to repent:
31
Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in
righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given
assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.
I
John 4:11
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are
of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
F. WHY DOES THE GOSPEL PRODUCE A STIR?
1. One God – stirs the idolater and atheist
2. Creator – stirs the evolutionist
3. Bible authority – stirs the modernist
4. Immortality – stirs the materialist (this world only view)
5. One church – stirs the denominationalist.
6. Lordship of Jesus – stirs the self-centered.
ii. The Gospel Produces a Stir – Peculiar System:
A. Peculiar thinking
Philippians 4:8
8
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are
honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever
things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any
virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
b. Peculiar security – Forgiven, saved, God’s family
Galatians 3:26-29
26
For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
27
For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
28
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is
neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
29
And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according
to the promise.
Ephesians 5:2323
For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of
the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
c. Peculiar teaching – Distinctive, Restoration, Biblical, Gospel
Romans 1:16
16
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God
unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to
the Greek.
Jude 3
3
Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common
salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye
should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the
saints.
Acts 2:4242
And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship,
and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
Iii. The Way Produced by the Stir:
A. peculiar people
I
Peter 2:99
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a
peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath
called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;
B. pleasing people
I
John 3:2222
And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his
commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
C. planning people
I
Corinthians 16:1,21
Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to
the churches of Galatia, even so do ye.
2
Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store,
as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.
D. prepared people
Hebrews 11:7
7
By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with
fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned
the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
Hebrews 11:40
40
God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us
should not be made perfect.
John 14:1-61
Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
2
In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have
told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
3
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive
you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
4
And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.
5
Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can
we know the way?
6
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man
cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Conclusion:
A. what a stir the gospel caused in the first century!
B. it still had the power to stir today
Romans 1:16
16
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God
unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to
the Greek.
Hebrews 4:12!
12
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any
twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit,
and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents
of the heart.
C. stir yourself to obey the lord!
Evening Worship
THE so-called
PREEMINENCE OF PETER
OR Is apostolic succession Biblical?
PART ONE OF TWO
Introduction:
a. The Scriptures are abundantly clear that, whatever preeminence was
enjoyed by the apostle Peter, was within the confines of his stature as a
fellow apostle, and not, as some contend, as head over the apostles.
b. Please pay careful attention the the following Bible passages!
I. concerning Peter:
a. There is not one throne in Christ's kingdom, but twelve thrones
28
And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have
followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the
throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the
twelve tribes of Israel.
b. The Holy City that comes down out of heaven does not have one
foundation, engraved with Peter's name, but twelve foundations, engraved
with the names of the Twelve
Revelation
21:14
14
And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names
of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
c. Peter himself included all of the apostles when he admonished people to
heed the commandment of Christ - "through your apostles"
II
Peter 3:2
2
That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the
holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and
Saviour:
d. when Peter opened the gates of the kingdom of heaven on the day of
Pentecost, he did so, not alone, but by "standing up with the eleven"
Acts 2:14
14
But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said
unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this
known unto you, and hearken to my words:
e. When the Jewish high priest moved against the church, he moved not
against just PETER, but against all Twelve apostles
Acts 5:17-19
17
Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him, (which
is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with indignation,
18
And laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the common
prison.
19
But the angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and
brought them forth, and said,
f. the authority of Peter was equal to that of Paul
Galatians
2:7,8
7
But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision
was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter;
8
(For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the
circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:)
g. PETER WAS "sent" by the Twelve as a messenger, had
Peter been the head
of the church on earth, as many espouse, he would have done the “sending”
Acts
8:14
14
Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had
received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
h. Peter's dignity was no greater than that of James -Galatians 2:9; and,
in fact, James is mentioned first.
9
And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived
the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right
hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the
circumcision.
ii. CONCERNING the church having a human head on the earth:
a. Matthew 23:8-10 - “call no man father upon this earth.”
8
But be not ye called Rabbi: for one
is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
9
And call no man your father upon
the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
10
Neither be ye called masters: for
one is your Master, even Christ.
b.
Matthew 16:13-18
“Thou art Peter” (Stone) - and “upon this rock”
(Christ) - The foundation of the church is Christ, not Peter nor any other
mere man.
13
When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his
disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?
14
And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias;
and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
15
He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
16
And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the
living God.
17
And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona:
for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is
in heaven.
18
And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I
will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
Paul clearly affirms Christ (not the Pope) is the foundation and
head of the church
I Corinthians 3:10,11
10
According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise
masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon.
But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.
11
For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus
Christ.
Ephesians 1:22,23
22
And
hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over
all things to the church, Psa 8:6
1
Cor 15:27
Heb 2:8
23
Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.
c.
Matthew 16:18,19
- the “keys of the kingdom” and the power to “bind and
loose” were given to all the apostles - not just to Peter.
18
And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I
will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
19
And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and
whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and
whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
d. Peter neither claimed nor exercised power over the other apostles.
Peter identified himself as “an apostle” not the chief or head apostle
I
Peter 1:1
1
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered
throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
Peter also served as “an elder” among other elders of equal
authority
I
Peter 5:1-4
1
The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a
witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that
shall be revealed:
2
Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight
thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a
ready mind;
3
Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the
flock.
4
And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of
glory that fadeth not away.
e. There is absolutely nothing in the book of Acts that would support the
supremacy of Peter. Acts records the work and preaching of the apostles.
There is not one line about Peter being the Pope.
f. What about the writings of Paul?
1. Paul, Apollos, and Cephas (Peter) all classified AS MINISTERS
I
Corinthians 1:12
12
Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of
Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.
2. Paul said Peter had a “wife”
I Corinthians 9:5
5
Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other
apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?
Matthew 8:14
14
And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother
laid, and sick of a fever.
