Love Chooses Part One of Two

Introduction:

a. song: "What the world needs now is love sweet love it is the only thing that there is just too little of."

b. We need love. But what is love? How does love act?

c. I Corinthians 13:4-7 tells us what love chooses to do.

4
Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

5
Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

6
Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;

7
Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

Love chooses to:

I. Be patient

 I Corinthians 13:4:

4
Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

A. Explained-manifesting forbearance under provocation and strain, not hasty

B. Exemplified-God

Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:

II Peter 3:20

C. Enlightened – We are to be patient toward others

 Colossians 3:12, 13

12
Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

13
Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

Ephesians 4:2

2
With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;

II. Be kind

I Corinthians 13:4:

4
Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

A. Explained-serviceable, gracious, obliging, mild, pleasant. It includes friendliness, compassion, generosity, tenderness

B. Exemplified:

Luke 6:35

35
But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.

C. Enlightened

 Proverbs 19:22

22
The desire of a man is his kindness: and a poor man is better than a liar.

I John 3:17, 18

17
But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

18
My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

III. Rejoice in the truth

I Corinthians 13: 6

6
Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;

A. Explained-rejoice with the truth. The individual takes pleasure in and stands for the truth. He delights in all that is good, holy, pure, and right in the sight of God

B. Exemplified: Barnabas

 Acts 11:23

23
Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord.

 versus Jonah who grew upset when Nineveh repented

Jonah 4

1
But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.

2
And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.

3
Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.

4
Then said the LORD, Doest thou well to be angry?

5
So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city.

6
And the LORD God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd.

7
But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered.

8
And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

9
And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.

10
Then said the LORD, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:

11
And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more then sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?

C. Enlightened. We need to be joyful in spreading the gospel and the salvation of others. Such love causes us to spread the gospel to the lost

 Acts 4:23-30

23
And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them.

24
And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is:

25
Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? Ps 2:1

26
The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ. Ps 2:2

27
For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,

28
For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.

29
And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,

30
By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.
